AWD's announcement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ladies and gentlemen, friends of the Democratic Underground, thank you for your attention this afternoon.

Like everybody in this community, I am a strong follower of progressive politics. I first became interested in the process when a young man named Bill Clinton shocked the country when he came out of nowhere to win the Presidential election in 1992. On that day, a seed was planted. That seed represented my interest in politics, and it has since grown a great deal.

As the Clinton presidency was attacked by Republican ideology, I became more involved politically and became an activist. I spoke out as often as I could against the ridiculous tactics and hypocrisy of the right wing as they tried to bring down a popular President for reasons that were not at all valid.

On December 12th, 2000, I shook off the title of 'political activist' and proudly donned the title "Liberal activist". I would no longer accept what was being done to my country and it's democratic process, so I took another step deeper into politics.

As I discovered Democratic Underground, my hunger for knowledge was satisfied as I found a community of like-minded people to share my interest with.

On June 14th, 2002, I grew into a 'radical activist' when I was forcibly removed from Ohio Stadium for the crime of facing North when pResident Bush was standing to the South of the arena. I promised you all then that I had fully opened my eyes and I would never close them again. I still maintain that promise.

As the drums of war began to beat, I began organizing weekly protests in my hometown of Canton Ohio, and we managed to wake up this sleepy town, which we had previously thought was full of conservatives. The crowds that gathered with us weekly proved that our conceptions about Canton were grossly exaggerated. There indeed was a segment of the population willing to stand with me against the war in Iraq, and my spirit was invigorated once again.

Today is the day that my love for progressive politics takes another step. I have decided that I will no longer be merely an activist, demanding change in our government and the way it runs this wonderful country.

This afternoon I officially declare my candidacy for the 16th District in Ohio. I now announce my intention to run for the United States House of Representatives. Rather than call for change in government, I will now MAKE a change in government. My campaign begins today, here and now. In the coming months, I will ask the citizens of Ohio's 16th District to support me in my campaign. Today, I ask the citizens of Democratic Underground to launch that campaign, and help me change from being a strong follower of progressive politics into a strong LEADER of progressive politics.

Thank you,
Jeff Seemann, a.k.a. Angry White Democrat

53. thanks goob they should designate you offical congressional researcher her
e you do a good job man and I appreciate it. Well in my research says Regala has been there for a while. I say AWD has a chance but of course he is the underdog. Now I did some more and this I find amazing and interesting I know most republicans are chickenhawks but Regala is a WWII era guy and he didnt serve sorry that just shocks me because most republicans are hawks and even the most hawkish republican I can think of had some WWII experience I think. What kind of guy is Regala hes probably really well liked and respect I would imagine.

He's a "cardinal" (House Appropriations subcommittee chairman), so he'll be pretty hard to beat. However, he might retire...then the seat would be a toss-up.

That's not to say AWD can't create a 20% swing! ;-)

Let's travel back in time to 1980. AWD is like the US; Regula is like the Soviet Union. Together now: AWD! AWD! AWD!

115. And....
...I watched that campaign. Jim Rice put NO signs up, did NO campaigning. All the votes he got were purely because his name was next to the "D" on the ballot.

My energy will help out a LOT. I have no issues with getting on a street corner and greeting people. I'll do whatever it takes to get my name out there.

Is that Regula's district? I'm currently attending the Ray C Bliss Institute of Applied Politics in Akron (Although I'm in DC right now for my internship.) It's an applied politics school, where we learn to manage campaigns, create campaign plans, raise money, look at voter rolls, target precincts, deal with the press, etc. etc. etc. I've worked on several campaigns in the Ohio area (None in Canton but I grew up in Green/North Canton) area. If you want to get together sometime or just chat email me at gentryholdings@aol.com

171. Wasn't that overturned?
I thought that the ban on minors contributing to campaigns was overturned by the courts as being unconstitutional. I could be wrong but I was pretty sure that some court ruled that minors should be allowed to contribute.

177. Yes, if it's the minor's own money.
Like your allowance, money from work, income from a trust paid TO the minor, etc.
What you CAN'T do is get $2000 from your wealthy parents and contribute it to the candidate of their choice.

182. I thought that ruling was stayed
SEC. 318. PROHIBITION OF CONTRIBUTIONS BY MINORS.

Title III of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (2 U.S.C. 431 et seq.), as amended by section 101, is further amended by adding at the end the following new section:

`PROHIBITION OF CONTRIBUTIONS BY MINORS

`SEC. 324. An individual who is 17 years old or younger shall not make a contribution to a candidate or a contribution or donation to a committee of a political party.'.

http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c107:H.R.2356.ENR:

As I understand it, the DC Circuit Court issued an extremely complex ruling on the validity of BCRA, which was then stayed in its entirety pending Supreme Court review.

184. Yeah
It think it may have been stayed, but the Supreme Court will rule on it pretty soon. And since the DC Circuit Court seemed to say very strongly that you can't ban minors from contributing to campaigns I doubt that the Supreme Court will overturn that.

Seriously, what are your issues? Given the geography, I'd be thinking jobs, jobs and more jobs. Where do you stand on NAFTA? WTO? Companies headquartering offshore?

Another plus is your media background, which, one hopes, would mean that the "presstitutes" will find it harder to ignore you than they do most other progressives.

How popular is Bush* there? How easy would it be to link Regula to Bush*?

87. Bush has very close ties to this district
Diebold headquarters
Timken headquarters
Major Bush contributors
Regula is very popular, but could go down when Bush goes down
Much money will be needed, AWD's opponent will have unlimited resources
It will be interesting to see how Diebold plays out. It could make AWD's campaign huge on the national front.

Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 03:39 PM by goobergunch
Regula will be 79 years old on election day and 80 by January 2004 (b-day: 3 December 1924)...the "too old, time for a change" tactic might work here...maybe compare his age to William McKinley.

The district hasn't elected a Democrat since 1948, but Stark County is a national bellwether...if it's a Democratic year, high margins in Stark County could help beat the more conservative outer counties in the district.

It would be great to see a DUer in William McKinley's district...

ON EDIT: He voted for PNTR-China...how popular is that in the district?

72. Some questions
But some questions:

1) How do you expect to get the money needed to run a competetive campaign?

2) It seems like you're only in your 20s. I will make the assumption that you've never run for office before. How are you going to get the county, state, and national parties to take you seriously?

3) Do you know what running for office is like and are you ready for the committment to do that?

Good luck with this race. I just hope that you know and that you understand that it will be very difficult to win. I also hope that the Springer candidacy doesn't bring you down.

1a) The local Dems have become much better at fundraising. I hope to use their efforts.

1b) When we did our peace rallies, we ALWAYS pulled in 100-200 bucks per rally just by passing a bucket around. It didn't seem too difficult among people who believe in your cause (and I have no shame in asking for it)

1c) I'd be lying if I didn't say I hoped DUers would help a bit with money.

I don't know how much I'll need, but money is rarely thrown into campaigns against Regula around here. Let's see what happens.

2) Although I often act like I'm in my 20's (and in my teens, and my pre-teens, etc), I am 34 years old. The county already takes me seriously. They saw what I did during the peace protests and threw their support to us often. State-wide, I have friends in office and have campaigned for many candidates. It'll take some work, but I can show the state party to see I'm serious.

I honestly have no clue yet how to get the national party to understand.

3) I have never personally run. But my campaign manager has and has many contacts in the US House (Kucinich, Barney Frank, and Stephanie Tubbs-Jones are among his personal friends). I am ready for the committment, and I have an excellent teacher to show me the ropes along the campaign trail.

Springer doesn't frighten me. He'll at least bring out people who never vote. If only they vote straight Dem, I'll be happy.

Thanks for the luck, and I hope I've answered your questions.

147. Is there anyone else running?
I don't know about the situation in Ohio but I know that in NJ the endorsement of the county committees is extremely important because a lot of people just vote the line in the primaries. If there is someone else running than it could be hard, but you are getting in pretty early which is good. I think it is probably hard to tell what will happen in November 2004 and Regula could retire since he is so old but that is unlikely. I think that if you run and lose to Regula you could have an extremely good shot when Regula does retire which can't be too far away.

I recall wishing I could have been there to have supported you and your classmates, and I applauded and cheered and lauded your praises to all in my physical environment who had no choice but to listen to me.

Jeff, I have watched you for quite some time; I have learned and laughed and cried at your side, albeit I am tiny and rarely seen. And what I have learned of and about you is this:

You are a man of courage and conviction, fierce determination, empathy and kindness, and you'll represent the 16th Ohio Congressional district with fiery devotion. If anyone can help reclaim this country and make our world a better place, it is you, AWD. And thru my happy tears, I'll be watching you as you accomplish your dreams, and reclaim America's. 106. Good for You!! and now my advise
don't get discouraged because he seems invincible. He is an entrenched incumbent and that in itself should be an issue. My advice is to go door to door and talk with people all over the district. If you have a farmers market in your district--put a table there and people will come to you just out of curiosity and you can make contacts. Get a web site going and target younger people--they care more than what many people think about the country and they are awesome volunteers.

I have faith--You Can Do It!!

189. If you do Farmers Market type things - do helium balloons -
It gets the kids interested and the parents will come over to get a balloon for their child. Gives you a chance to get your name out there and they at least get to meet you and shake your hand. Plus, the kid is walking all over Farmer's Market with a balloon with your name on it.

Low key, don't have to have much in the way of handouts yet - just some basic take-away material - since the parents may not want anything at that time.

For you, or your campaign staff, it's just name recognition.

129. How can we help?
First, congratulations and best of luck to you. Geographically, Canton has to have been touched by the closing of steel mills and rubber plants and it seems like a great place to re-stake the Dem. party. I think it can be done!

More specifically, what can we do to help you? I live in Columbus and it would be nothing for me to drive to Canton and aid you in any manner. I have degrees in sociology and political science and graduated from law school just down the road in Akron. If you need anything such as writing position papers, research on issues, or even someone to hammer yard signs into the ground, please let me know.

Woohoo!!

153. Regula has no campaign site
He doesn't have a website to run for reelection yet, according to politics1.com. That leads me to think that he hasn't announced that he is running yet. So, the possibility of retirement is there.

But, Bill Young is term limited as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee. And Regula is next in line even though it is unclear if he will run or if he can beat a couple of other people for the job. It seems like it would be really hard to beat him if it looks like he will be chairman of such a powerful committee.

157. From a newbie
AWD, Congrats!!! I am new to DU and this is my first post, please be gentle with me. I am not new to the thoughts or ideas expressed here however. My conversion sounds somewhat similar to yours, AWD. I used to consider my self quite the independent but the more outrageous the RW got during the Clinton admin, ending in the impeachment debacle the more I realized that I had to take the polar view of the repugnicans. After the "selection" I have become more and more focused. I discovered truthout.com a while ago and recently ran across buzzflash and consider myself well informed. I have read the PNAC policy paper put put in 2000 and knew when I read it we were headed for war, that it had been pre-decided. We need everyone we can get to stop the insanity!!!

Well, I am no longer a virgin. :smoke: Kick some ass AWD, I wish you luck!!

So pony up! I think I have the details correct (it may be more than $100). I gave $100 to the Hagan campaign, and then discovered that deduction while doing my taxes in March. $100.00, right off the top, from the Ohio budget to Mr. Seeman.

I'll be watching for the time and place to make a donation to the campaign!
