I wish the media had asked him about Delay's pending visit to the middle east to spout off against a Palestinian State, how does this compute with Bush's support for that state? If Bush doesn't agree with Delay, what will he do to stop him?

Edited to add link on Delay trip:

18. I can give it a try....
but with the caveat that I have mastered the ability to tune Shrub out quite well.

It was a quick photo-op with the new palestinian prime minister Abbas (sp?) talking about a palestinian state, the settlements, etc.

The first question from a reporter was about Liberia which Shrub didn't like and his tone went shrill from that point on.

Other than that, I think I tuned him out, sorry :-(

69. No,,, but you have a point- Let me clarify
Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 02:19 PM by Tinoire
I should have written "It will bite Bush in the ass" to be clear but my personal belief for the last 4 years has been that our refusal to either deal impartially or stop blindly supporting (arming and funding) one side would bite us all in the ass.

The Palestinian problem isn't going to go away until justice prevails no matter how many road-maps & visions Bush comes up with.

I also think this is going to bite us, the Democratic Party, eventually because our reps have been the most one-sided supporters of Israel and this is not well viewed by the Muslim community- to include the 3 million member voting Muslim community.

Bush has been playing a very dangerous game with this one- all for votes, because his road map is just a smoke and mirror illusionary charade. IMHO, he and Sharon, in their blind, mad desire to marginalize Arafat, pushed the latter aside thinking that a puppet leader, Abbas, would be easier to deal with. This has not been the case because Abbas, like Arafat, can't, won't sell the Palestinians down the river.

We continue to negotiate with Israel on the implementation of its obligations. Some progress has been made, but movement needs to be made in terms of freeing prisoners, lifting the siege on President Arafat, Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian areas and easing up freedom of movement to Palestinians.

<snip>

(ABBAS) As you have said many times, Mr. President, attacks on the dignity of the Palestinians must end. Palestinians must be able to move, go to their jobs and schools, and conduct a normal life. Palestinians must not be afraid for their lives, property or livelihood.

Some steps have been taken by Israel so far, but these steps remain hesitant. The new era of peace requires the courageous logic of peace, not the suspicious logic of conflict. The outcome must correspond with your vision, Mr. President, achieving a peace that will end the occupation that started in 1967, the establishment of a sovereign, independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and a just, agreed solution of the refugee question on the basis of U.N. Resolution 194.

This vision cannot be realized if Israel continues to grab Palestinian land.

If the settlement activities in Palestinian land and construction of the so-called separation wall on confiscated Palestinian land continue, we might soon find ourselves at a situation where the foundation of peace, a free Palestine state living side-by-side in peace and security in Israel, is a factual impossibility.

Nothing less than a full settlement freeze will do, because nothing less than a full settlement freeze will work.

For the sake of peace and for the sake of future Palestinian and Israeli generations, all settlement activities must be stopped now and the wall must come down.

<snip>

and then the whole thing seems to degenerate into Bush-babble... You see Abbas is supposed to roll over. He's the pliable replacement for Arafat remember? He's not supposed to embarrass the US and say that Sharon isn't doing his part. He's not supposed to mention unpleasant facts like walls and political prisoners, many of whom are children detained against international law.

Notice too how Bush calls the new "Schandmauer" (Wall of Shame) a fence and Abbas comes back calling it a WALL. No no, Abbas is out of line here and the journalists asking their pesky questions are out of line also.

Picture of the Bush/Sharon "Fence" that appropriates some of the best lands remaining to the Palestinians...

Using the bully pulpit to intimidate even the international press. Implying that international journalists "learn" from American journalists. Singling out two journalists to mock.

49. Here's the question I think set him off
And thanks for posting the transcript.

QUESTION: Would you like to see Israel release the political prisoners? And would you like to see them stop building this barrier wall?

BUSH: First of all on the wall, let me talk about the wall. I think the wall is a problem and I've discussed this with Ariel Sharon. It is very difficult to develop confidence between the Palestinians and the Israelis -- Israel with a wall snaking through the East Bank -- and I will continue to discuss this issue very clearly with the prime ministers. As I said in my statement today, he has issued a statement saying he is willing to come and discuss that with us and I appreciate the willingness to discuss it.

On the prisoners, I think it is very important to, you know, have a frank discussion on the prisoners. We ought to look at the prisoner issue on a case-by-case basis. Surely, nobody want to let a cold-blooded killer out of prison that would help derail the process.

I mean, after all, it doesn't make any sense if you've got somebody who is bent upon destroying lives and killing people in prison, if you were let them out it would make it harder to achieve the peace we all want. And so, I think it is very important to analyze the prisoner situation on a case-by-case basis.

"Somebody who is bent on destroying lives and killing people in prison." Sound like anyone we know? Hmmmm.

Case by case basis? * in TX- EVERY single death penalty case rubber-stamped through with nary a glance.

59. "..and the Israelis -- Israel.." sounded to me like a real
slur, but shrub caught himself, barely making a lame attempt to cover it up....

52. again with the fixation on the "rules"
this asshole is constantly whining about how the reporters are trying to "cheat", he comes off as a total brat.

Going back to the debates against Gore, where he got all snippy about Gore "breaking the rules" and asking him a question.

41. I think I know what set him off
Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 01:01 PM by Sophree
He started to get very agitated when he was answering a question about the death penalty for Palestinian terrorists. He was probably remembering his own record or, rather, the mean old Press who insists on asking him about his death penalty record as Gov. of TX.

It REALLY makes him mad and he was probably thinking about it the whole time he was trying to answer the question.

Notice how he said he "Really understands" the position of the PPM, but not in an empathetic way, an angry one.

On edit: I f*cking HATE RealPlayer as well. :argh: That was long and painful.

Edited again for correct emoticon. D'oh!

state the facts about the economy and Iraq and how Bush has loused things up and let the chimp lose his cool and make an ass out of himself.

68. Perhaps it's because he knows....
Edited on Fri Jul-25-03 02:15 PM by Oaf Of Office
his party faithful are wondering why Bush is now negotiating with terrorists. One of the charges placed against Saddam was his giving money to "terrorists" a la Palestinian families. How is Bush giving $20 million to the Palestinian government, any different? See how that must make the wingnut "moral compass" spin completely askew?

66. Huh??
I watched the whole 20 minutes twice.
I was all ready to see spittle and a red face.
I saw none of that.
Why the sensational title?
I don't get it, bush does plenty to laugh about, we don't need a lie to point out that he is an imbecile.
Next time tell the truth.

I'd rather be laughing at him at the zoo than drinking a beer with that jerk. Hopefully he will act like an arrogant jerk that he is and people will realize jeez that Bush is a jackass and I will say known it since day one people.

83. only if you like mean-spirited teasing with your beer!

I always tell people who think Bush would be an enjoyable as a dinner/drinking companion that I can act silly and insulting too ... and they won't even have to make a campaign donation.

79. the reporter he was referring to...
.."on the left" was David Gregory (the same person who wigged him out by speaking to Chirac in French).

And, by the way, only three questions were allowed, instead of the four that Bush promised at the beginning. As Bush stepped away, a reporter hollered out "THAT WAS ONLY THREE QUESTIONS!!" and that's when that evil, slitted-eye look came as shown above. He was making snarky remarks to Abbas.
