Local impact of the CA Recall
I worked the Democratic Party office yesterday where we MAY get 5 phone calls in 4 hours. The phone was ringing off the hook yesterday. We had 2 Greens calling in to find out how to re-register as Democrats. We had several people who were non-affiliated -- as in hadn't voted for some time, if ever, calling in to find out how/where to register to vote. Each and every one of them were pissed off like you wouldn't believe -- we're talking FURIOUS!

There was a story on our local news about how this has thrown the elections office into a panic. Normally, they have 6 months to prepare for an election -- they now have 77 days to pull this off. This will result in hiring MANY more election workers working overtime to reach the deadline and it's going to cost the county $10 million. Keep in mind, this scenario is happening in every county in California. Fresno happens to have a surplus at the moment but most counties are operating under a deficit due to the crappy economy.

This may be wishful thinking on my part but I think this is going to backfire on the Republicans in a big way.

1. I sure hope so
I think it's unbelieveable that we have a Republican representative who is willing to buy himself into the Governor's House.

I hope it doesn't work. And I hope that stupid Hun Arnold Muscule-Head gets in the race and loses big.

Nothing is better than a humbled Republican. (A blubbering Rep. Thomas made my day).

2. Can Issa be recalled for gross malfeasance
and dereliction of duty...and costing the state millions that it cannot afford???

Some enterprising democrat with money needs to get THAT going..:)

3. Under current law
which is VERY cloudy at the moment, we don't even have to have a reason. That's what's happening with Davis. No reason has been given for this recall. So, to answer your question, "yep." And don't think for a second that Democrats in this state wouldn't do it in a hot flash. 'Course, by then it most likely will have gone to the state Supreme Court which it needs to do anyway. This is such an incredible mess!

4. I'll go one further
I'm betting not only will this recall backfire but I'm betting Issa is OUT in his own district in the next election cycle. It's not only Democrats that are furious, it's moderate Republicans as they feel the guy's an embarassment to the party -- which he is.

5. Two of my Republican co-workers aren't too happy, either
Like me, they feel that the recall should be used for better reasons than Mr. Issa and his friends give. They will vote to retain Davis. They also said that if Issa should become governor as a result of the recall, they would be inclined to sign a recall petition against him the next day.

Issa is nuts. The state has a budget shortfall of nearly $40bn and he wants to hold a special election that will cost $35 million that will do nothing to solve the problem, no matter how it comes out.

6. I think probably 80% of the people
who signed that petition didn't understand the impact this would have, not only on the state level but on the local level. When their cities/counties are operating under a deficit, social services are being discontinued, their local taxes are going up and THEN they are presented with a $10 - $20 million dollar bill on top of that, it hits home. I'm betting a WHOLE lot of people who signed that stupid petition are now rethinking their decision.

7. I see people outside stores all the time collecting signatures
and I NEVER see anyone actually reading what they are signing.. The person collecting them usually says something inocuous like "..This petition is to have better schools"... or " "sign this petition to lower your taxes"..

Any time I hear that kind of spin, I immediately know that they are just trying to put some wacko proposition on he next ballot that will funnel MY money into the pockets of some rich person..

I never sign them... but I see a lot of people signing them :(

8. My guess
is that these are the same people who rely on Faux and Rush for their daily news.
