same sex marriage
I didn't want to affect the lounge with something political...

I hear people make the savage wiener argument that if you allow same sex marriage it will lead to allowing dog/human marriage or marriage between siblings etc.

I think I have a decent rebuttal, but I'm not sure I have the best wording:

Imagine that marriage where only recognized between couples of the same race. If people argued that people of different races should be allowed to marry, what would the argument against it be? Wouldn't there be just as much weight behind the same argument: if you allow interracial marriage, next you'll be allowing dogs and people to get married, or siblings to get married?

dogs aren't people, plain and simple. They don't have the right to citizenship nor do they have free-speech rights.

2. What you've observed is the old slippery slope argument
Or better yet, the slippery slope fallacy. You can reply that it's a fallacious argument and ridiculous to imply those far-fetched scenarios. You can also call it rhetorical scare tactics.

3. Throw it right back in their faces.
Weiner's argument is nothing but a fallacy of equivocation. This is why I wan't to get mandatory classes in school for logic. Basically, you can take anything to a rediculous extreme. For an example we could look to gun controll.

If people can own handguns, why not assault rifles? If they can own assault rifles, why not rocket launchers? If they can own rocket launchers, why can't they own nukes or bioweapons? So on and so forth.

4. Last time I checked...
...animals couldn't give informed consent.

Beastiality is exploitative, as are the typical forms of polygamy and incest.

Gay marriage harms no one, and in fact, helps society by encouraging stability, monogamy and good health in a large subsection of the population... one which has, until now, had no support whatsoever in maintaining constant relationships.

8. I do not think it has anything to do with gay marriage...
I think it is just an issue for the Repugs to jump on to be divisive in the next election. They want to make accusations about something, and start a culture war. Why should they care who marries?

9. Start?
Start a culture war? It hasn't started yet? I thought it did years ago.
