and oh, by the way, I'm a white man. That's right, SUV driving, suburban born, bred and living family man. Irish and German, polish wife, blonde/blue kids. I hate white men. I belong to an Irish Catholic fraternity called the Ancient Order of Hibernians. I have been getting sick of some activities of the RC Church lately but I like the group and I'm my chapters Freedom for All Ireland chairman. This lets me not only inform my brothers about the continuing struggle for a united Ireland but it lets me inform them of rethug efforts to hinder same. Just last night me and the president of my chapter were slamming Rick Santorum in front of the chapter. This of course got some of us into a political discussion where one of the older guys said that, since Iraqis were killing our boys, that we should just kill all of them, which makes tons of sense. He went on to continue to say that we stopped Milsoviec too soon. One or 2 guys complained about taxes whereby I said that I guess "liberals would rather have health care and conservatives X-Wing fighters". One of the conservatives said that he was in favor of health care "just get a job with health care" to which I said it didn't work that way anymore.
I left disgusted and have been thinking about it ever since. I'm not sure if I should continue there or switch to an organization that promotes peace and tolerance more actively. This is more disturbing because there has always been a socialist undercurrent to Irish Catholicism and this population is one that, itself, endured an attempted genocide. These are people that would love to shake Gerry Adams' hand but, obviously, have no idea what Sinn Fein's platform is. Have any of you dealt with the revalation that people you liked are actually horrible, ignorant folks and it just needed to come out? Fuck this war!
