Dozen Arrests at Anti-war Protest (in Iowa)
http://www.theiowachannel.com/news/2641592/detail.html

This is the first I heard that 3 Iowan's died last week in Iraq.. The news media is sure doing its best to keep these deaths quiet!!

Polk County Sheriff's deputies dressed in riot gear arrested 12 peace activists Sunday after they crossed a line and entered property belonging to the Iowa National Guard in Johnston.

more

The arrests came within a week of the deaths of three Iowans in Iraq. The activists say the best way to support the troops is to make sure no more of them die.

1. Huh
Well, here in FLorida they've announced all the people that have died--not their names, but that we've had locals die. And while I'm all for protesting, crossing onto national guard property just gives them an opportunity to arrest you.

2. I think they did it to generate publicity
There are probably a lot of Iowans who will read this and say to themselves: "those protestors are correct, this war is wrong"

4. Mustn't be seen as too angry
We must stand shoulder to shoulder with the chimp. Yeah, that's what the people want, so ignore what the people say they want, to do the bidding of what the Republicans, and their media, tell us they want.

DLC winning strategy.

5. Oh man those crazy wild Iowan peace huggers
:bounce:

Good for them. If I am not mistaken that is pretty near the "heartland" right?

6. Frank Cordaro makes a habit of getting arrested.

Veteran protesters Rita Hohenshell, 78, of Des Moines and Frank Cordaro, 52, a Des Moines Catholic priest who is leaving the priesthood, were arrested. Both previously have been arrested and served prison time for civil disobedience.

The whole thing was staged, and I'm not meaning this to be taken negatively. I saw one local TeeVee newscast showing an actual "line" painted in the grass that the protesters stepped over. Then a Polk County Sheriff's deputy gently hand-cuffed each protester. One deputy was kicked in the knee by an unname woman protester.

Then the commandant of the Iowa National Guard spoke platitudes about how the Guardsmen and women in Iraq where guaranteeing the protesters' right of free speech (bull-*cough*-sh*t, bull-*cough*-sh*t)yaddy-yaddy-yada.

Cordaro's a pretty cool guy.

7. We need more Cordaro's
These protest do not make the news unless there are arrests. It was the same with anti-war protests in the 60's, but not nearly as bad as today.

Today the protests are ignored unless there is trouble. I thank these people who were arrested so the our opinions can make the news.

9. That's why the BushRove thought police cordon off protesters
Out of sight, out of Dubya's (and TeeVee's) mind.

You hit that nail on the head. That tired trype make me ill. What's going on in Iraq has nothing, nada, zilch, a big goose egg, not an iota of resemblence to protection of free speech. It IS, however, why we are given the right, as citizens, to protest against our government when it is wrong.

Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
