I noticed something in this article.
Not a single word, about the right's Daddy Warbucks, Richard Mellon Scaife.
Figures.

By Laura Blumenfeld
THE WASHINGTON POST

22. How about Ted Turner?
Have we forgotten about the original maverick media boss? He's so liberal that he gave the UN over $1 billion in one shot. His CNN is sometimes called Al Jazeera West and the Communist News Network, Time too. or maybe they are just fair and balanced in the literal sense.

The guys at CBS also had some cajones to make the Reagans.

35. A couple of comments
Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 10:57 AM by Bandit
First Turner gave the UN one billion but it was over ten years at a hundred million a year because the US refused to pay their dues and he was embarrassed for us. Second he sold CNN years ago and the only people who ever referred to CNN as Communist News Network or Clinton News Network are the extreme whacked out hard right known as Freepers. And in reality they were at one time actually very fair and balanced However since Fox News created their market with sensationalistic opinion pieces disguised as news CNN has lusted after Fox's market and so lost their journalistic edge and become another FOX News with opinion immitating news. There really is no legitimate news source in America now except on the internet or some small newspaper outlets. It is non-stop brainwashing and it is quite easy to see who those are that have been indoctrinated. So speak up and tell us more of your sound-bites.

9. Soros aided collapse of the "Iron Curtain"
Soros' "open society" movement began to some extent with the donation of many copy machines to publicly available locations in eastern Europe. The copy machines made it that much harder for the powers to control information. He believes in empowering people, even though I do believe I have heard he is a member of the Carlyle group.

12. If he can give away $5 BILLION DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....
...then he can surely part with $200M. Here's what you do. This guy loves publicity, which is all cool, whatever. He should call a press conference and talk about how no one can compete with a guy who has $200M for an uncontested primary, etc. Then, have one of those huge cardboard checks on an easel with 2004 Democratic Presidential Nominee on the Pay to the Order of... line, in the box - $200,000,000. Because of limits, break it up over time, and over his various business associates, personal friends, and family. Bottom line, nominee has $200M too. That would RULE!

And if he won't do it, Mark Cuban probably would. Just so long as the nominee wears Dallas Mavericks sweatshirts on the road, hehe.

Later.

19. This man is going to make a HUGE difference!
He's pledged $75 million for GOTV efforts in 19 key electoral states in 2004 - which isn't against the new campaign finance laws if he manages the GOTV effort by himself, or with a non-profit org:)
If I had to guess (don't remember if I read this somewhere or what), he's going to try to boost turnout in Democratic strongholds. The reasoning is: if turnout in Dem territory is 10% higher than it is in GOP territory, our chances of winning that state skyrocket.

This man is too sweet for words..

21. The plan to follow, Mr. Soros,
1. Start buying radio stations NOW..
2. Counter rightwing radio..program for program..with equal ferocity
3. Buy a newspaper chain... a BIG one..see #2
4. Open up a training center.. "Talking Points University"
5. Run and FUND a democrat in every stinking small race where only a republican is running..

there is much more to do, but that would help for starters.. We are only THIRTY YEARS behind..:eyes:

23. You gotta love the irony
This is the type of thing you expect from Bush's cronies. I know for a fact that Soros is a good guy and is not benefitting financially from his philanthropy. But still aren't we all about Grass Roots and "Two million people giving $100 each". Or is that just Dean.

hmm... I'd like to hear more on this

25. From each according to their ability.
Soros is a person too. He has the ability to do more and does. Much of his work (check out http://www.soros.org/">Open Society Institute) has to do at the most basic level with empowering people using interesting thinking-out-of-the-box methods.

28. My favorite part is this:
“It’s incredibly ironic that George Soros is trying to create a more open society by using an unregulated, under-the-radar-screen, shadowy, soft-money group to do it,” Republican National Committee spokeswoman Christine Iverson said. “George Soros has purchased the Democratic Party.”

Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black, eh? I mean c'mon now, they didn't complain when the Mellons and Scaifes and others like them poured in hundreds of millions of dollars into right-wing groups over the years. It's about time someone took them on!!!

29. Not to Mention He's NOT Being Secret About It
He's coming right out in the open and saying exactly what he wants to do and that he's going to spend lots of money to do it. That's not under the radar, that's right out in the open.

Has Scaife ever admitted that? Lying liars...

32. Let's just hope he spends millions on personal security.
Dollars to donuts that Soros is not long for this world. Money is the one thing that that the Republicans really can't stand being used by anyone but them. This is as real as a threat to Bush gets, I have a very bad feeling.

Someone let him know that he needs to transfer a few billion to a trust to be immediately used by Democratic and progressive groups in the event of his death before the election 2004. That would be real life insurance for him.

Edited on Tue Nov-11-03 12:15 PM by Nederland
This is good news for economic conservatives like Kerry, Lieberman, Clark, Edwards and (maybe?) Dean. For the economic leftists in the group however--Gephardt, Kucinich, Bruan, and Sharpton--Soros will only further the party's push toward open economies and free markets.

Not a bad thing in my mind, but that's me :)

38. This is just
utterly fantastic! :)

I think if we could get him, Turner, maybe Bill Gates (who seems to give to liberal charities) on board to help the movement it would help tremendously. The difference here is that any money given by these men should be accepted without the possibility of kickbacks. After all Bush isn't getting donations as he is a pyramid scheme. He has everyone put some money in and keep sending and then they make a ton of profit when it comes back around to them.

Post what you want, but this is a gift for the ouster of bush.

Sometimes I think there are people that would gripe about anything...

Win the Lottery: "damn, I have to pay taxes on this windfall!"

Get cured of cancer: "What no more attention in the Oncology Ward!"

The Second Coming of Christ: "What took you so long!"

Get a grip, quit complaining; it DOES get old.
