For Dean supporters only!
in other words, I don't want to get into a flaming war about Dean. Thanks! Here's an idea, I'm going to ask my friends (who would normally give me a Christmas present) to make a contribution to Dean instead (in support of his newly decided fund raising strategy). I'll be writing my check out next week, when I get paid, for the $100 he needs from 2 million people. God...I want to just kick ass and get this money raised in record time! p.s. I too LOVE Al Gore and am devastated as to what happened to him (and, consequently, to our country). However, he has stated time and again that he's not running and I believe drafting him would be a waste of valuable time, energy and resources. God...how I wish thing could be different.

1. I did this for my birthday!
Got $25 from my sister, $50 from my brother, $25 & $50 from my friends, and I contributed $200 of my b-day money.

It works!

* 1. Add a Penny for the Internet*
**********************************

With the talk this week about campaign finance, I'd like to remind all Dean
volunteers about a program that we started. We originally called it "Add a
Penny for the Internet" -- when you donate to Dean For America, if you were
going to donate $10.00, make it $10.01 instead. If you were going to donate
$50.00, make it $50.01 instead. The extra penny lets the campaign know that
you are announcing your support for Internet politics and the grassroots
movement.

This idea began last February with grassroots volunteers trying to get more
resources directed toward them. The Dean For America formally adopted it as
"The Meetup Challenge" in May, with the same rules -- add an extra penny to
show you support Meetup, and grassroots Internet political organizing. At
that time, Joe Trippi reported in the Wall Street Journal that donations
totaling $400,000 had come in with an extra penny added. In September, a
reporter told me that the amount had broken $1 million in donations with
extra pennies tacked on.

I don't know what the total is now, but I do know that most people have
forgotten about it. We shouldn't. In future campaigns, everyone will ask,
"How can you prove that people were donating because of Internet activity
and because they supported Internet politics?" We can answer, "Count the
extra pennies!"

There's also a great coincidence that lets you reinforce the add-a-penny
theme. Dean fought City Hall (in Burlington VT) on his property taxes
because they claimed he owed $76.01 in overdue fees in September. He fought
them so he could show that, despite running for President, he was a frugal
guy who wouldn't pay when not necessary. So donating $76.01 says two things:
1) Add a penny for the Internet; and 2) I like Dean's Yankee frugality. See

7. You are too sweet and brilliant!! I can't do the same...
I was going to mention to my loved ones that instead of a Christmas present I need cash for my car getting out of the shop. I wish I could be at the Point where you are...but I will send what I can.

9. Hate to Pour a Tiny Bit of Cold Water, BUT...
You need to be a little careful to stay within the law re: campaign contributions. Here's what you have to attest when you contribute:

I am making this contribution (and paying this credit charge) with my own personal funds, and I am not using funds provided by any another person or from any corporation, labor union or national bank to make this contribution.

What I would suggest is that, if someone is giving you money as a gift for Christmas or any other occasion, ask them to make a donation in their name in lieu of a gift. That's OK.

Accepting the money then contributing it yourself is more questionable.

Of course, if anyone would like to contribute to Dean via Pilots for Dean, it'd certainly be appreciated. See below.

10. "Accepting the money then contributing it yourself is more questionable."

Once you accept a gift of money it is YOUR money to do with as you please, including contributing it to a campaign.

The problem is with the opposite situation, i.e. givigin money to someone on the condition that they contribute it. If someone gives you money and tells you to contribute it they are breaking the law. If someone gives you money with no strings attached and YOU decide to contribute it, that's fine.

12. I am old school on this
I think gift givers should decide what gift to give. I love Dean and give him money when I am able to. But I do think that asking for specific gifts borders on the greedy. Just my 2 cents.

my intention is to have my friends (who are mostly progressive anyway) give what they can in lieu of giving me the ususal presents that I receive from them such as CD'S, books, gift certificates, and a variety of other things that I normally receive. How this could be interpreted as "greedy" is quite confusing to me (?). Oh well.. I guess a lot of people have become cynical and think the worst of others (and I certainly understand that given what's going on in the country). Also, I'm not asking that they give me the money for me to contribute, but for them to contribute if they're confortable doing so. Thanks to the others of you who "got" what my intention was.
