Newspaper Pictures of Gay Wedding Announcements
Grant Storms, Local New Orleans Right Wing Moron Messenger of God was on the radio this morning objecting to the Times Picayune putting pictures of Gay couples in the Wedding Section of the Paper. He said it was against "common decency" and "common sense" and against community standards and the paper should anticipate a backlash. This is the same wingnut who took his video camera to the gay bash in the quarter last September (Decadence) and spent hours photographing gays cavorting. Please share with me what the fuck these assholes fear. What threat does a gay marriage have to my marriage or to my community standards? Storms promotes the hate standard. Maybe I just answered my own question.

1. He fears he might actually *be* gay...(shock! horror!)
It's that whole "Methinks he doth protest too much" thing. I bet this guy's a closet homosexual, and it sits poorly with his skewed religious training, so he hates himself to deal with the guilt.

How's that for amateur psychology at 7:23am? :D

3. paper is undermining morality
is the headline of a letter to the editor in today's Times-Picayune. Writer states "Pope John Paul II ... preached about the dangers of democratic societies laying aside moral law in the quest to offend no one. A society cannot exist without moral law."

This is the funniest bit:

"The massacres, world wars and totalitarian regimes of the 20th century should be a reminder of what can happen when nations forget about morality and the word of God."

Thankfully, the paper also published "Paper's policy shows courage" letter

4. funny thing is, gay people may be more keen on wedding announcements ...
Edited on Wed Jul-23-03 03:57 PM by Lisa
.... organized receptions, "bridal registries", and all the trappings of getting hitched, than many straights who are opting to live common-law and not even go to the registry office! There may well come a time when many caterers, wedding boutiques, newspaper announcements editors, and other in the "wedding industry" will owe their jobs to gay nuptials.

A friend of mine came back from her prenatal classes and announced that of the dozen or so other women, the only ones who were married were the lesbians! (I'm in British Columbia, which allows same-sex marriage.)

5. Our paper recently started printing gay announcements
They put all weddings, anniversaries, etc. on a "celebrations" page in The Oregonian and included gay announcements. I was happy to see it.

When I was a kid I didn't know what homosexuality was and I didn't know any gay people (or, if they were gay, I didn't realize they were gay). Now I am a member of an all-American type nuclear family (mom, dad, boy, girl, all living together) and my kids routinely socialize with our gay friends. It is very normal to them.

Progress marches on sometimes, doesn't it?
