Is that democratic-leaning? Why are they still voting or is it just that the results haven't come in?

Unfortunately, Madison, Rankin and DeSoto counties are all still out and they are HEAVILY Republican. It's not time to go to bed yet, but its not looking good.

23. Well if Gore won Hinds than wouldn't Musgrove
Gore was slaughtered in Mississippi but Musgrove is close to winning. So, wouldn't a county that went for Gore, probably go overwhelmingly for Musgrove?

6. Votes not yet in in Hinds and Delta precincts!
Hinds and Delta precincts--our salvation. This is REALLY GOOD FOR MUSGROVE!!

Look guys, I live in a small town and I had to wait for 30 minutes tonight to get a ballot, and then another 15 for a booth to come open. There were only 3 booths! Could have used 15. For retired people, that's ok, but for working people, they get frustrated and leave.

Other issues:

Republican monitors were intimidating voters by videotaping them signing their names and casting their votes. How would you like to have some old crone with a sanyo in your face while you do this? Goddam it, I have defended my state to no end, but if Musgrove loses......
....
...

Who wants to adopt me? Can't be a Californian; I want to live in a Dem governed state.

But that Musgrove might pull it off.

What do they know that we don't?

Don't give up hope.

P.S. We are winning in all the cities/states Gore carried and swing states.

Earlier there was a chance of an upset in Adams county sheriff race, the dem Brown was leading the incumbent R, Terrell, current prez of the nat'l sheriff asso. or something.

42. Its encouraging to see that many who voted Green last time have wised up
and tried to stop the rape of the state. At least if this holds, about 5000 may have bit the bullet.

I am suspicious at so much of Rankin and Desoto still being out. No reason for that. I wonder if somebody's holding votes?

Just heard a creep at R headquarters express dubiousity at people still in line to vote.

54. ok peeps, Dem AG Mike Moore just said that...
it doesn't look good for Musgrove. 230,000 votes still out, 30,000 vote margin between them.

I am not ready to give up, though. Starting to feel a little disheartened.

I don't know if you've noticed, but leately it's been a little more than sometimes. If it was only sometimes, I'd be fine, but I'd like to repeat my call for mandatory voting and the repeal of laws like Mississippi has, barring ex-felons from voting for life.

64. Musgrove was taking on former head of the RNC, the selected
President of the United States, the Vice-President of the United States and Rudy, the hero from 911. Haley B outspent Musgrove by a few million.

Whatever happens, he has carried himself very well.

61. I've seen this all before...
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 12:17 AM by burr
in Georgia...when Roy Barnes and Max Cleland were defeated.

Something weird is happening in the south. Democrats can win if they run against the incumbent, or if they are running in an open race. But if the Democrat is the incumbent...lookout!!!

I'm not sure what is causing this, but being a Democrat now has the same stigma in the south that running as a Repuke once did. It is definately an uphill battle to win in any southern state, and winning a statewide victory only means they better get ready for the next GOP onslaught. At one point people like me completely missed this...but to win as a Democrat in the south, you almost have to run against your party. It didn't used to be like this for Democrats, but this was how it was for the southern Republicans in the last century. And now..these party roles have been reversed!

That is some of the best analysis and observation I have seen all night.

What it means to me is that the South now defaults to a Republican, unless the citizens of a given state or district become extremely unhappy with a GOP incumbent.

This means that a Democrat can win from time to time as a challenger, but the voting instincts in the South are to return a Republican to power so long as the GOP runs a candidate that is even remotely tolerable to the populace.

There is definately some truth to the idea that the Democratic Party has utterly lost the South. It will take quite some time to reverse this I am afraid.

113. I think its more where the national party guns get aimed.
Many state-wide MS dems won by huuuge margins. The national R's made Ronnie a target. I think aWol was here at least 3 times, and VP, etc., in one of the very smallest electoral vote ponds.

And Ronnie is holding off concession for a reason, although it could be because some people were still voting even a few minutes ago. Enough reason to wait in my book.
