"The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as _____is to____"
"The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
___________ is to ___________ "
analogies

01)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
the Rainbow flag is to 'unrelated to gay pride'

02)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
glass bongs are to 'unrelated to smoking products other than tobacco'

03)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
deregulation of energy is to 'unrelated to California blackouts'

04)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
California energy crisis is to 'unrelated to the unfortunate success of the recall'

05)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
red ribbon is to 'unrelated to GLBT issues'

06)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
Woodrow Wilson is to 'unrelated to United Nations'

07)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
being able to speak Klingon fluently is to 'unrelated to being considered quirky'

08)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
blue helmets are to 'unrelated to peacekeeping'

and I'd even go so far as to add:
09)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
Bush is to 'unrelated to election fraud'

Though perhaps it would be too strong to say:
10)The Confederate flag is to 'unrelated to racism' as
the sun rising in the morning is to 'unrelated to the sun setting at night'

5. It's like Rashomon
For some people it is and for some people it isn't.

It all depends what is in your heart.

To say that all people waving a confederate flag are racists is over generalizing.

7. True enough, BUT.......
People who hold the fight and struggle AGAINST racism close to their hearts do NOT wave confederate flags.

And that's the truth of the matter!

And another truth - those who MINIMIZE the significance of racist symbols are more guilty for paving the road to more evil that the rabid neo-skin head who sputters about wildly and madly.

9. Slavery wasn't the only (nor, IMHO, the primary) reason for the Civil War.
Edited on Sun Nov-02-03 04:25 AM by w4rma
IMHO, the primary reason was Republican economic policy which favored North-Eastern big buisnesses and the monopolies/oligopolies of the time (Standard Oil, Railroad tycoons, bankers/moneylenders) over Southern farms and smaller buisnesses. The North-Eastern carpetbaggers who came down to the South to buy up whatever they could at fire-sale prices and rip folks off after the war, didn't help North-South relations either.

That said, yes the Confederate flag was hijacked by the Klu Klux Klan and other racist groups. Yes, the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism to many people. IMHO, it would be best to try and remove this racist and divisive meaning from this flag and replace it with another, such as heritage. Talking about the economic reasons that the Civil War was fought will also help replace that meaning with a more productive one.

and I wrote MY reply BEFORE you added the 2nd paragraph. But I am no mood to have to edit my stuff, so don't condemn me for not keeping up with you.;

But while I am it.......do you know where the KKK came from since you claim they 'hijacked' the conferedate flag? Could it be that they are actually the southerners who refused to give up after the civil war and just mutated their cause??????\

They didn't HIJACK the flag.....they were the creators of it. They just kept carrying it. A direct line of ascension.

16. why do you assume that?
since when is understanding the origins of something tantamount towards "obviously" justifying it? Such bullish jumping to conclusions is most unsavory.

18. The south wanted slavery to spread to other states farther north...
and the north wanted it to STOP, because then white men, who wanted to get paid for their work, wouldn't be able to compete with the free slave labor. That's what the war was about.

To dispel another myth while we're at it: Lincoln didn't think of enslaved Africans as equal human beings, and his emancipation proclamation was a strategic move -- cripple the south's economy. He prepared to ship them to Africa as soon as the war was over.
