Information on Justice Janice Rogers Brown
C-SPAN is showing the confirmation hearing right now. From what is coming out, she seems like another Justice Souter and there is mention of groups on our side of the line launching hatchet jobs. Something is up here, why would bush appoint a judge that is so moderate? From what has come up, she has made rulings that have helped our groups and conservative ones equally.

2. She is getting pounded by
Feinstein, Kennedy, Durbin, and ESPECIALLY Feingold when he comes out later.

Orrin Hatch tries to label the left as putting out those cartoons. He groups People for the American Way with The Black Commentator, which is just plain wrong. It is a whole sympathy trip

She believes that Companies should have a right to free speech, which is TOTALLY not workable. She also is against affirmative action, abortion, and she ruled in a case that the the government has to pay money for a zoning change from residential to transient I believe in San Francisco.

But I must admit. She has been through a lot. Growing up in Alabama and all. Also making a living for herself.

I am still kind of split as to whether we should filibuster her or not. She seems like a nice person, but she is pretty conservative.

3. I take a simple approach to such questions
Bush wasn't elected, therefore he has no right to name anyone to a permanent position. (Or any other position, but that battle's already lost)

12. Bush was elected
5 votes to 4, the only ones that counted.

Since counts have shown that he lost Florida, he also lost the electoral college.

4. Information from a great site:
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 03:41 AM by Isome

Rep. Diane Watson (D-CA) at a Congressional Black Caucus .::press conference::., last week. "She's cut from the same cloth as Clarence Thomas," declared Eleanor Holmes Norton, the District of Columbia’s non-voting representative in the House, and one of the caucus’s leading legal lights. George Bush “hasn’t fooled us” with his nomination of Brown to become the second Black woman on the DC Court of Appeals.

...Janice Brown is “to the Right of Clarence Thomas and Antonin Scalia,” according to a study by .::People for the American Way::.. “Her many disturbing dissents, often not joined by a single other justice, make it clear that she would use the power of an appeals court seat to try to erect significant barriers for victims of discrimination to seek justice in the courts, and to push an agenda that would undermine privacy, equal protection under the law, environmental protection, and much more.”

Your uneasiness is justified. Click the links and find out more.

5. I was getting rather suspicious
When Hatch started praising her liberal rulings, that started setting off alarm bells in my head. Feinstein just worked her over for her total disregard for judicial precedent. If we fillibuster it might hurt, but if the African-American community knows that she is fake then we'll be fine.

6. As crude and & rude as it was
that cartoon on the black commentator site said it all. The black folks do not trust her and think she is just another pawn of Bush. I think they should fight it all the way.

11. She is not considered fully qualified for the position
According to NPR, the American Bar Association gave her the lowest approval rating, which means that almost half voted not to recommend, and that none voted that she was highly qualified.

I heard some of her responses to questions. She didn't think the 14th Amendment should apply to states, and seemed rather confused when asked why. She hedged when asked for the Constitutional grounds on which she based some of her more contoversial opinions. I'm no lawyer or Constitutional scholar, but it was obvious to me that this person was, at the very least, ill prepared to answer the Senator's questions.

13. The 14th Amendment question...
Sunk her for me. Wonder if she's okay w/ Dred Scott v. Sandford?

14. If you have any question about her
please do yourself a favor, and start getting acquaianted with her history as a judge, then maybe you'll have a clue when you watch her being questioned by members of the Senate committee, and it all won't simply befuddle you.

16. Google Her Name
And the first page is covered with links to Right Wing sites.

One writer even accuses Democrats of "lynching"-- outrageous shades of the Thomas hearings!

The full court press is on!

Defensive Offence called for!

Call the Senate Judiciary Committee members and tell them you oppose!
