What were the best lines in tonight's debate?
It's unfortunate that the format means no one gets to develop a point in depth, but given that limitation, I'd like to make the best of it

--what line did you like?
--who said it?
--why did you like it?

I loved when he said that it insults our intelligence to ask what the middle class should be willing to sacrifice. Al's my hero!

What actually can you put forth in 1 minute... "Explain your plan for the economic rivival of the US in 1 minute". It's a ridiculous format for a debate.

15. I liked how Clark related his military experience
into an example of governance. Making sure that each person has proper health care and education, that their family is well cared for and that just as an army depends on it's soldiers and functions better when they are listened to......... The government is responsible to the governed. That this administration has not done that. At all.

38. But Clinton's was not a disaster.
I think his point was, "why are you making this an issue with me, when the voters clearly did not see it as a problem with *, Clinton, or others?"

While I agree that * has been a foreign policy disaster, a lot of the swing voters see FP as a * strength. I think he was trying to reach those people to say that there is no need to rule him out as a candidate since he had a governor's level of experience if they didn't rule out * for that reason.

23. Sharpton's line -- help me out here -
something along the lines of "poor people are expected to send their sons to Iraq to die, yet rich people don't want to hold up their end of the deal by paying taxes"

Something to that affect. I'm totally mutilating it. It was GREAT.

It is not all there but some of it is.

Every line of Al Sharpton's is a keeper.

I also appreciated Clark's zinger about Shelton's trash talking him..."But if anybody knows, would you please let me know. Thank you."

Dear General Clark_Shelton is in the business of lobbying for large weapons companies who are currently sucking up tax money meant for Social Security. Also, Myers etal want to weaponize space, and who is Myers best friend? I bet you already knew that!

30. Here's Sharpton's best line!
"It is an insult to keep telling Americans to send our children to war is an honor, to risk their lives to die for the country, but it's a burden for the rich to pay their taxes to the country."

LOVED that one. That pretty much says it all.

Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 12:36 AM by Loyal
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A21551-2003Oct26_2.html

KUCINICH: Excuse me a minute, you missed some of us this round.

MOSELEY BRAUN: Yes, two of us didn't get a chance to answer.

IFILL: And we're going to get to you as soon as everybody finished rebutting. But right now, it's to Carl.

CAMERON: Believe it or not, much of this has been in rebuttal action and not actual formulated questions, and that's where we're -- and you're coming up next.

MOSELEY BROWN(sic): Well, just because nobody's mad at us...

That line was the best... just cause it was, lol. :)

34. I LOVED Braun's method of selling public health care. She said,
Edited on Mon Oct-27-03 03:30 AM by Cat Atomic
it was a way of encouraging business growth, by taking the burden of employee health care off the employers' shoulders.

It catches opponents in a Catch-22. They often complain that unions are bad for business; that the higher wages and health plans they're forced to provide make it impossible to turn a profit.

Well, then how can they possibly argue against the government essentially subsidizing business by providing health care?

I thought that was a clever angle.

First of all, my mother is from the South. One of the things I learned is you can't plant a watermelon seed and grow oranges.

Nice proverb, and to the point.

Didn't much care for his framing of it, but the proverb itself is good.

45. I missed it, but I love reading Sharpton's lines here.
He (or whoever writes his oneliners) is brilliant, and the man just doesn't get enough credit for it.

It raises a question though. If Sharpton is this great rhetoric, then why are his ratings unaffected by these debates?

Ah, I know. Because at the end of the day, nobody actually watches these debates (save a handful of DU-ers). I certainly don't feel like I missed a major event this weekend. ;)
