2000 election, I need help!
You all have so much wisdom that I need help with a question on the 2000 election? I have a question that has come up in my on-line class. Could you all explain to me why the Supreme Court gave the idiot the white house and what Katherine Harris did by purging the voter roles, was that legal? Some one is saying it was done right and I disagree.

3. Real quick
I would love to make an extensive post here, but I am very busy right now, but I can tell you this. Florida., like 5 other states bans ex-felons from voting for life. Getting your voting rights back is more bureaucratic than a day spent standing in line at the DMV. Harris had the voter rolls purged of felons and contracted this service out to a private company called Choice Point/Database Technologies, which I think has since been swallowed up by Accenture. They screwed up big time, purging the rolls of people with similar SSN's to that of real felons, people with last names similar to felons or living on streets of actual felons, as well as mixing up names with a list of people in jail in Texas (Hmmmm.. who could have provided that?). Over 55,000 people were wrongly purged, disproportionately black and Hispanic. Even if you figure that only half of those people would have voted anyway, it still throws the election in doubt given Al Gore's -537 vote margin. That's the synopsis, I don't have time right now to go hunting for links.

4. Help For Ya....
The purging of voter rolls was wrong. Voters whose names matched those of convicted felons were stricken from the rolls. Meaning, if there was on Tboby Watson who was a felon, all Toby Watsons got scratched from the rolls.
It was also improper for Florida to do this, because in some cases, the "felons" in question had committed their crimes in a different state, where they were not classified as felonies...merely misdemeanors.
Third, they concentrated on largely black voters when they undertook this ourging...knowig full well that balcks were by and large likely to vote Democratic.
And the Supreme Court merely ordered the re-count stopped. And Katherine Harris, who was Bush's Florida campaign manager, as well as Florida's A.G. certified the count that made Bush winner, after stopping the recounts.
Anyone with more specific info, feel free to add to mine...but this is my understanding of the events as they unfolded.

6. The Nation Magazine
printed an incredible article written by Vincent Bugliosi on 2/5/01 called "None Dare Call it Treason." It later became a short book called "The Betrayal of America." This is a MUST READ regarding the 2000 election. Bugliosi outlines in detail that what the Supreme Court did was unconscionable - and he's a moderate - not by any means a "bleeding heart liberal."
