Character Actor Vincent Schiavelli Dies

ROME -
Vincent Schiavelli, the droopy-eyed character actor who appeared in scores of movies, including "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Ghost," died Monday at his home in Sicily. He was 57.

He died of lung cancer, said Salvatore Glorioso, mayor of Polizzi Generosa, the Sicilian village where Schiavelli resided.

Schiavelli, whose gloomy look made him perfect to play creepy or eccentric characters, made appearances in some 150 film and television productions, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Among the movies: "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Amadeus," "Batman Returns," and "The People vs. Larry Flynt." He was selected in 1997 by Vanity Fair as one of America's best character actors.

2. FUCK! He's one of my favorites!
I love his voice and his delivery. And that droopy mouth thing he has going on.

Really, really awesome actor.

At the top of my favorite character actors for sure.

Too bad he never got a chance to move up and play a non-character-actor role. I think he would have done brilliantly.

6. Damn. He'll be missed.
I had dinner with him and a group of his friends at Frank & Musso's several years ago. He was a decent guy.

7. Honestly, I thought he had died some years ago!
He was always one of my favorites because of his offbeat roles.

10. Along with John Cazale, Mr. Schiavelli
was one of my favorite character actors. Both were Italian-Americans and both died of cancer. If I remember correctly Vincent was once married to Agnes from "Moonlighting" fame. He will be missed.

A very recognizable face, although I did not know his name. I remember him in many movies & loved him in "Buckaroo Banzai."

18. Same here!

Always remember him from "Buckaroo Banzai", funny since non of the articles I've read so far even mention it. Always talking about Ghost or Batman Returns heh.

13. I never knew he was Italian (or Sicilian).
What a great actor. He just drew you in and swept you away. It never came across that he was acting, his performance was always true to his character.

14. 'Hello, hello, hello...
Edited on Mon Dec-26-05 02:11 PM by americanstranger
..what a wonderful word, hello...'

He was great in 'Crazy People' with Dudley Moore. In case you don't remember, he's the guy who said pretty much nothing but 'hello' for most of the movie.

Sad. He was a funny guy. :(

ON EDIT: Oops. Thought that was him in 'Crazy People' - but it was actually David Paymer. My bad.

15. That's so sad
I agree with previous posters--I didn't remember his name, but I could recognize him on sight because of his very unique look. But what an incredibly talented actor! I especially liked him as the ghost of a homeless man in "Ghost."

RIP, Mr. Schiavelli.
