Dear Gov. Dean -- Make room at the inn for the two ethnic Uighurs …
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 08:13 PM by understandinglife
24 December 2005 (# 19)

Laura Rozen aptly summarizes the situation with one word – Appalling.

Josh White filed the following report in the Washington Post, today, 23 December, 2005:

A federal judge in Washington ruled yesterday that the continued detention of two ethnic Uighurs at the U.S. prison facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, is "unlawful," but he decided he had no authority to order their release.

U.S. District Judge James Robertson criticized the government's detention of Abu Bakker Qassim and Adel Abdu Hakim, who have been jailed at Guantanamo for four years; they have been cleared for release because the government has determined they are not enemy combatants and are not a threat to the United States. But Robertson said his court has "no relief to offer" because the government has not found a country to accept the men and because he does not have authority to let them enter the United States.

Robertson wrote that the government has taken too long to arrange a release for the men, who cannot return to their Chinese homeland because they would likely be tortured or killed there.

The Uighurs – along with seven other detainees who have been found to be "no longer enemy combatants" …… Robertson wrote that their situation is untenable. "The detention of these petitioners has by now become indefinite," Robertson wrote in a 12-page opinion. "This indefinite imprisonment at Guantanamo Bay is unlawful."

Gov. Dean, send out a message that every person on the planet will hear. Send out a message that will begin restoring what America once was.

Call on the President to give the order to allow those nine innocent and badly harmed human beings to come to America and be free to build a life.

Call on the wealthy to divert one of their private jets to Guantanamo on Christmas day, and bring those nine detainees to a place in America where they can have a life while America finds ways to make amends for the horror Bush and his corrupt administration have caused them.

Make room at the inn ... as evidence that the answer to the question “America, Or Not?” is resoundingly, “America.”

Thank you for your continued leadership,

Peace.

2. More about the Uigurs
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 11:02 PM by Canuckistanian
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uigher

The Uyghur (Chinese: : 回紇; : 維吾爾) are a Turkic-speaking ethnic group living in northwestern China mainly in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, where they are the largest ethnic group together with Han Chinese, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, and Russia. Another group of Uyghurs lives in Taoyuan County of Hunan province in Southcentral China. Uyghurs form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by China.

Gee, maybe the Chinese have something to say about this?

3. IIRC the irony here is that the Government claims
They cannot be sent to China because they would be tortured. I say where would you like to go Sir, if it's in my power you are on your way there.

Or maybe we could drop them off in a forest in Mogolia and let them walk out.

4. Yes, the irony is tragic because our State Department still makes ...
... lists of countries that violate "human rights" and everyone, everywhere else just howls at the hyporcrisy. These two human beings deserve the very best treatment that imperialistic America and their Chinese banker can provide.

Peace.

5. Forest? Mongolia?
Check your Atlas, dude. You couldn't hide the dandruff from a gnat in that country.

And since when do they hold back prisoners because "they would be tortured"?

Tell that to Maher Arar.

6. From the OP...
Robertson wrote that the government has taken too long to arrange a release for the men, who cannot return to their Chinese homeland because they would likely be tortured or killed there.

Covers the torture.

As to Mongolia, that was just a remote sounding to me locale, a loose reference to the guy they dropped in the forest and let walk out.
