Do Judges get too much unearned respect?
Over the years I have become much more cynical in general, but more so of people in authority. Maybe it’s because I care for many of these people as patients and see a different side of them when they are sick, vulnerable, and show their true character.

This judge’s approval of a restraining order against Dave Letterman is ludicrous, and I wonder if it gives the average Joe, food for thought about judge competency?

“SANTA FE, New Mexico (AP) -- Lawyers for David Letterman want a judge to quash a restraining order granted to a Santa Fe woman who contends the CBS late-night host used code words to show he wanted to marry her and train her as his co-host.”

P.S. A heartfelt thank you, to you wonderful people. I don’t post much, but please believe me, when I say that you have kept me from losing my mind the last couple of years. I truly hope every one of you have a great New Year, in spite of them.

1. There are two kinds of respect:
Inherent respect and earned respect. People confuse them. The position of judge deserves respect automatically. The behavior of a judge affects how much earned respect he/she should have.

2. Don't know if it gives the Average Joe food for thought...
...but It just gave me a fun idea:

Let's all file for restraining orders against Bush! We could claim his smirks, coke-jaw moves and twitches are all "code" for threats against us personally.

With enough of them in force, he'd have trouble moving around the country.

3. Oooh!
I like that, but is there a judge that will grant those restraining orders?

8. The concept of inherent respect is for fools.
Any position of authority is only deserving of as much respect as the person who occupies it.

6. A judge's bias can be a source of a judge's incompetence.
"I wonder if it gives the average Joe, food for thought about judge competency?"

There's a picture of Letterman in the article, but no picture of the plaintiff: Colleen Nestler. Maybe the judge liked the way she looks? Maybe the judge doesn't like Letterman's jokes?

7. Judges. Don't get me started.
Whether appointed or elected, they are politicians, with a few exceptions. Many are buried up to their necks in doctrine, usually rightwing, that completely controls their voting or judging.

9. Why not get you started? Who is to judge and who is to be judged?
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 09:56 AM by Boojatta
Who is to serve in the military and who is to be served by the military?

Who is to be head of the executive branch that enforces the law and who is to initiate judicial proceedings when the executive branch violates the law?

10. Judges drive the republicans crazy
because, dammit, there are so damn many of them! And they're spread out all over the country. How the hell is a monolithic right-wing control machine supposed to dominate them and put a lock on them so that they only serve the interests of big corporations and the other Good Guys???
