1,985

b. No (26%)

c. Not sure (4%)

Why does it still say "2,828" total votes? I voted but the numbers didn't change from when someone voted earlier in this thread.

46. Exactly...
In fact, his whole recent public relations (advertising/propaganda) campaign/series of speeches has been designed to do just that--help to stop or reverse his (wonderful) tanking :hurts: public approval ratings.

The sad part is that he's being given credit for being open, for taking responsibility, for admitting his mistakes, accepting blame for using flawed intelligence in his decision to invade IRAQ, and therefore appears to finally be interacting with reality, showing signs of humility and of, at least potentially, learning from his mistakes. It's particularly grievous since he's done note of these things. If you read exactly what he says, he skates around these ideas and doesn't quite admit anything, but he leaves just enough holes that the press can't help itself but to connect the dots and thereby summarize the content of his speeches in a way that's very helpful towards making him sound like he's finally changed and really taking responsibility for things. No doubt just what Rove intended.

And as I feared, ;( it's working. At least to some extent and for the time being. Surely, since he's truly unrepentant and hasn't changed in the slightest, given time, people will see it and his numbers will drop again--if his spying on American citizens problem doesn't do it first!

If only the press weren't either stupid or complicit with the guy. If only such a large part of our citizenry wasn't so poorly educated, easily duped and given to delusions. If only we could find a "real" Democratic leader who would stand up and tell it like it is (as an example of what such a one should say, consider Bill Moyers). If only...

45. Well, it may not be simple, but...
As a psychological type, they (RepubliCons) tend to be angry, repressed, passive-aggressive with a desire to punish those who don’t conform to their version of reality. Worse yet, they actually like the existence of inequality between people (of course, especially when they have the advantage)!

For the real dirt on Republicanism as Mental Illness (or at least personality disorder), see the report:
Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition

For their introduction/overview to their study/report, see the page:

Researchers help define what makes a political conservative

By Kathleen Maclay, Media Relations | 22 July 2003 (revised 7/25/03)

BERKELEY – Politically conservative agendas may range from supporting the Vietnam War to upholding traditional moral and religious values to opposing welfare. But are there consistent underlying motivations?

Four researchers who culled through 50 years of research literature about the psychology of conservatism report that at the core of political conservatism is the resistance to change and a tolerance for inequality, and that some of the common psychological factors linked to political conservatism include:

* Fear :scared: and aggression :mad:
* Dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity
* Uncertainty avoidance
* Need for cognitive closure
* Terror management

Methinks there's a fair amount of paranoia as well.
