The president is not saying he may spy on political rivals, he is saying he may use the incredible, massive resources and power of the U.S. federal government to spy on any or all of its citizens, at any time and place, without any oversight whatsover.

The level of this kind of threat to the people themselves is far more catastrophic and far more dangerous than anything that was involved with Watergate.
