Which story will get more press tomorrow: Bush's speech or Bush's spying?
If the spy story continues to be a hot topic tomorrow, moreso than his "major" speech, they will know they are in deep shit. Bush told Lehrer that it was not the "story of the day". And he may have been correct. It may turn out to be the "story of the year"? We will see if the "spying on our citizens" has any lifespan or if people don't give a crap? This week's news will tell a lot about which way things are going. Put your ear to the ground...

1. It will be the speech
Only because it's "new," and that's the heart of "news." They know how to manage the news cycle.

Heck, even if I could influence the choice of stories at my newspaper, I'd still put the speech first tomorrow morning -- but, of course, with appropriate analysis from the NYT or WP.

3. But some stories have "legs"....
and some don't . Yes, the speech will start the day but will it be standing on its own legs at the end of the day? Or will another story creep back up to replace it? Some stories are not so easily buried.

Pissed always gets the press.

On edit: Unless it's an enormous peace rally.

7. I'm inclined to agree with you, this people is pissed!
The other thing that caught my attention was Cheney's surprise visit to Iraq. It is hard to convince Americans that we are winning in Iraq when the VPOTUS has to sneak into the country unannounced only to surprise the Iraqi minister he spoke to. Almost everyone who views that cynical media event will see it for what it was.

My emails to my legislators were sent early Sunday morning and my handwritten follow-up to my Representative has been inked, to be mailed this am.

I just hope that I'm right about this!

4. Speech is a hiccup; spying is a long-distance runner.
Nothing new in the speech, plenty new in the spying.

6. Rangel and King were arguing about the spying after the speech
They was on Larry King. Maybe that's a hint that the Dems will continue to bring it up.

11. Spying. It's illegal and unconstitutional. That is impeachable. And
they know it.

15. news forcast for Monday December 19, 2005
The morning will begin with standard accounts of bubble-boy's speech, followed by cool to hot editorials by mid-day. We'll see a change over by evening with spinning and gusts from the bush-bubble-choir. Some areas may experience a scattered flurry or two of wire-tap stories.

16. It'll be the spying.
The speech was the same old same old. The illegal spying is new, but more importantly, it hits our citizens where they live (as opposed to in Iraq, which most Americans can't find on a map).

Everyone uses the phone. Most people use e-mail. People will put up with a lot (obviously) but breaking the law to secretly spy on us is going to be very unpopular once it gets out.

That's my prediction - hope I'm right!
