Lately there's been a HUGH increase in spelling errors on DU
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 11:23 PM by linazelle
Whatsupwiththat?

Look at this:

Oh he does need help. As long as you agreed to his plan that he is not incompetent, he is the best President of the US and dead and destruction is the only solution for a better and more peaceful world.

I think he crave for the kind of ovation accord to Bush senoir by the joint Congress when he annouce Victory in the Gulf WAR. Like it or not Bush senoir got his head screw on right.

If you ever watch that on cspan you will understand what I means.

or this:

Duers. have their head up their but on this impeachment issue. The american People do not have the appetite to impeach a president in a time of war. I wIt is a Republican Congress and that lowers the possibilities dramatically. Most Democrats in the House do n ot want to impeach the President. The only one even talking about is COnyers.

You also seem to conveniently forget who would become president is Bush were successfully impeached. If you some how nail both of them.....Ted Stevens becomes President...

There are more but you get the point.

Personally, I think it's a purposed backlash for all the fun we've made at the "morans" but that's just me.

Why do you think more posts like this are showing up lately?

48. Okay, I'll tell you the truth this time what it is
It's someone who's trying to cover up who they really are by acting like they can't spell. You know, someone using another handle who doesn't want to raise any suspicions. Could be any one of us, maybe even you. Could be an alien doing it because who'd ever suspect someone who couldn't spell being an alien from outer space. Next time you catch someone spelling like that, ask them something about the earth that they wouldn't normally get taught in Outer Space like "Who was Mickey Mantle?" If they don't come up with the answer in 3 seconds you now it was someone from Outer Space invading our forum.

22. Ordinarily, I'd agree
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 11:31 PM by Warpy
However, some misspellings are dead giveaways, like "looser" for "loser" and "moran" for "moron." It's like listening to people talk about their fine joolery and looking for a realitor to sell the house and never forget talking about their cousin the former athalete on the newkewlar sub. There a few things out there that raise a red flag. These are some of the worst.

Misspelling "misspelling" or "definitely" is something else, as is posting in pure Typoese, something I do, myself.

as in whizzzzz (onomatopoeic (bet I misspelled that)), whereas wiz is short for wizard. Just to put that question to repose. I think we're currently experiencing intellect diversity among the administration and the majority party in Congress. It'd be cute if it weren't so annoying - nice little 'rans, so cuddly and dumb. They're worried whether we're going to despair, BWAHAHAHAHA.

Certain minimal standards are required if we are to prevent ourselves from becoming like the defilers we oppose. Cultural vandals have a common MO involving demolition of functional structures and replacing them with useless ones hiding self-serving ones. Let's not be like that.

24. I think most of the errors you are pointing out are simple
typos -- people who are engaged in a conversation and not bothering to check spelling. Rapid posting seems to create mistakes through finger fumbles.

There is a fairly significant amount of true misspelling (not the deliberate kind, i.e., 'moran') on the board. Spell check would help with some of it, but many of the errors are the kind that spell check won't catch.

Makes me a little crazy, because I'm a self-admitted spelling Nazi (and a teacher) -- but it's the thought that counts, in the end. I trust that in more formal conversation, those less than perfect spellers improve a great deal!

:-)

38. An Occasional Error's Ok Of Course, Since Lord Knows It Happens To The
best of us. But it does irk me as well when a poster just completely ignores the concept of spelling and grammar to such a degree it makes the post appear as a mockery.

A spelling error here or there is ok. But blatant neglect is not only annoying, but in my opinion takes away from the context of the post itself since a message can easily be lost amongst the ruins of bad grammar and spelling.

Hey, we are all in a rush sometimes and of course there are some that just simply aren't spelling bee winners. But that's why Skinner was so kind as to add a spell check button, bless his soul. :)

41. I go through these weird times when I will spell "their" as "there"
or the same type of thing with other similar words that mean different things based on which way they are spelled and I don't realize I typed it the wrong way (and spell check obviously wouldn't pick it up)until after I read through it later - after it is posted. Then, of course, I edit it.

I don't know why my brain does that. I obviously know the difference and recognize it but I don't always "see it" the first time.

Weird.

45. Yeah I do that. I've posted some things that I couldn't edit much
to my shagrine. And I understand there are some who are grammatically challenged--but usually there is some consistency when that happens. You don't see the grammatically challenged using perfectly coherent language, and what appears to be good vocabulary, along with glaring subject/verb agreement errors. Something is amiss there IMHO.

Ignoring basic rules of the English language is disrespectful to those with whom one is communicating. And it is disrespectful to society in general. Just my humble opinion........

84. ROFLMAO, you got me there.
But yes, I do actually know how to spell punctuation. I suffer from Speedy-Keyboard syndrome on occasion, but I try not to make a HABIT of it, and generally come back to edit my spelling errors.

Unlike some, I do not wear illiteracy as a badge of honor.

83. LOL, I had no trouble reading your post just now.
I'm referring to the IDIOTS whose posts resemble Greek or pig-latin. They give me a headache. We all know who THEY are.

the Sam Hill they are saying, what with the spelling, grammar, and punctuation bloopers?

I am not saying I don't try to read their posts, but it's impossible to have an intelligent EXCHANGE of ideas with some of these dolts. It's almost like illiteracy has become HIP.

78. I've been here almost 4 years and didn't know we had a spell check!
And.. I don't really care. If anyone is that hung up on spelling, then I would imagine they haven't a grasp on the seriousness of our real problems in the world. Are we trying to exclude the less educated?

87. adding "er" to inappropriate words is MUCH worse
like "stupider" instead of the proper usage of "more stupid" but I'm seeing it everywhere - including in the press.

88. I've noticed it too
The most disturbing thing is that some behave as if illiteracy is a badge of honor. :eyes:
