Poll question: Jesus: Prince of Peace or Prince of War?
In light of fauxsux's "Liberals hate Jesus Show"

What does Jesus really stand for after all these years?

1. Ruh Allah
That is a title for Jesus in the Islamic tradition. It means "Breath of God". Jesus is considered the Seal of the Saints. As I understand God and as I understand saints, that would make Jesus Prince of Peace.

Salaam

3. Sounds like our Muslim posters got the point
It's really too bad so many people raised Christian have turned to Calvinism, instead.

4. I'm an atheist who believes Jesus lived as a man of a peace.
But official powers saw that his legacy and his followers could be twisted to serve them and their agenda.

8. He lived as a man of peace EXCEPT when He...
He lived as a man of peace EXCEPT when He was doing things like telling people who were crippled that they were crippled because they were bad people, or sending demons to drive a thousand innocent pigs to their death over a cliff, or telling his followers that most of them will burn in hell for eternity, or talking up how much "wailing and gnashing of teeth" there will be, or saying things like:

"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be the members of his household." (Matthew 10:34-36, NASB)

and

"Do you suppose that I came to grant peace on earth? I tell you, no, but rather division; for from now on five members in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three..." (Luke 12:51-52, NASB)

So, yeah, he lived as a man of peace except when he was reveling in violence and suffering.

10. There will always be a division
between good and evil. I believe that is what he meant by he did not come to bring peace.

He was remarkedly prophetic about not bringing peace...not bad for a carpenter from the desert.

12. don't bring things like truth into the discussion
jesus is our buddy.

i like the scripture quote there. funny how that stuff gets glossed over. kinda like god in general: he gets none of the blame, but all of the praise.

6. How did Jesus Himself respond to that question?
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 08:44 PM by Rev. Day-Bu
Check out Matthew 10:34: Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

So I think we can see how Jesus Himself would vote in this poll.

He follows in the tradition of His Father.

Exodus 15:3: The Lord is a man of war: the Lord is his name.

9. And I can pick some
Peace quotes, too.

"Jesus said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid"(John 14:27). He also said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest"(Matthew 11:28)."

7. As long as the existence of a hell is preached ....
and as long as Jesus is promoted as 'The Father AND the Son', then I refuse to ascribe to Jesus the moniker 'Prince Of Peace' ....

Jesus is depicted as the very arbiter standing at the Gates of Hell, personally tossing 'sinners' into the grand ole 'Lake O'Fire' .... HE will preside over the 'gnashing and wailing' of those sinners roasting in the 'fierce liquid fires', which Tertullian exclaimed in delight ...

That doesnt seem very peaceful to me .... Does it you ?

I have always questioned the notion that creatures of a 'perfect' deity are blamed for their failings, while the creators themselves carry no responsibility whatsoever, and FURTHERMORE, the creators take 'pleasure' in punishing their own failed attempts at creation by torturing, eternally, those creatures who could not be perfect ....

What kind of despicable game is this ? ....

Wonder why I'm atheist ? .... dont ....

14. In reading "The Beatitudes" it would
seem Jesus was a man of Peace..

"He began to teach them, saying:

Matthew 5:3 - "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:4 - Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Matthew 5:5 - Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land.
Matthew 5:6 - Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
Matthew 5:7 - Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 5:8 - Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God.
Matthew 5:9 - Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Matthew 5:10 - Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 5:11-12 - Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven."

I'm not a "Christian" but there's no fucking way from reading about Him that he would Bomb innocents in Iraq or anywhere else.
