Die Abteilung der Heimat-Sicherheit
The Department of Homeland Security sounds so much more convincing in the original German.

3. Then why'd you put it in German?
As a person who's spent years of his life learning the language and studying abroad there, I'm sure I'm more sensitive to this than most. That having been said I think you're being disingenuous.

Did you get pissed off at Arianna Huffington for saying the same thing about a Pat Buchanan speech?

11. not "German bashing"
It's sometimes useful to hear how something in English sounds in German since, unfortunately, that language is to Americans very much identified with militarism and totalitarianism. For instance, when that billboard was put up I think in Florida that said, "President Bush: Our Leader," I made sure to translate it for people into German, "President Bush: Unser Fuehrer," so they could get see how dangerous what that billboard was saying was (past the general creepiness of referring to anyone as your "leader").

It is a shame that German language=Nazi in this country, and while I would love if people would be able to see through the German and actually understand the similarities between Hitler's and Bush's/the Religious Right's speeches (instead of seeing Hitler as a uniformed madman with a funny mustache screaming in a funny language), the association is there, so why not take advantage of it to make a point?

Personally, I think making it a full compound word really pushes it to 11.

Prost!
