5. Frist is still yaking. Then there will be a
period for morning business. Hopefully, some of the Dem Senators will talk about it.

Frist says he expects a short session today. No votes today or tomorrow. Monday, he expects to have the House bills, Defense Authorization, etc, and expects a very busy day with the votes starting early.

Frist said he didn't know yet if any questionable provisions have been (or will be added, I assume by Ted Stevens for drilling in the Artic)yet, since the bill has not been passed by the House yet.

Frist talking about Avian flu now.

10. Yes. I heard Dennis Kucinich say, in his
one minute speech on the floor this afternoon, that the Repukes have snuck a provision into the House Bill giving liability immunity to the big Pharmas because one of the companies is using vaccine containing something called MF59 (I think that's what he said). He said that was the stuff that was in the contaminated flu vaccine last flu season. I don't think I will be getting any of their stinkin' flu shorts.

Stupid Cornyn running his mouth now about the Patriot Act.

68. My local news is pushing those damn flu shots for kids!
December 16, 2005
Study: Flu can kill children quickly, vaccination urged

By LINDA A. JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer
One-third of the 153 American children killed by the flu during the 2003-04 season were dead within three days of getting sick, and many of the youngsters were perfectly healthy before they were stricken, government researchers reported.

http://www.katu.com/news/story.asp?ID=81824

My kids and I have never gotten a flu shot. Mercury and whatever the heck MF59 is.... I'll take my chances with the flu.

40. What the fuck is wrong with Sessions?
Is he just incredibly stupid or a really bad liar? (or both)

Investigations of "terror-related activities" are totally different from approved investigations into a specific crime, i.e. tax-evasion cases, as he is referring to.

In the former, there is no specific crime and whatever turns up then becomes the bases of the relatedness to "terror-related activities." In the latter, other evidence has already formed the case.

52. Senator Carl Levin is up.
Sessions is urging Levin to just examine the legislation.

Levin said he has studied it and the differences are very significant.

Levin said he wants to talk about something else. Sen. Warner said that House leadership is considering entering into the conference report an unrelated provision in the Defense Authorization Act. ... The House Leadership wants to add a provision after the Conference Report was signed. We can't possibly operate when they want to add a provision to a conference Report that is already signed. Totally unacceptable process. Warner said he was not going to accept this process. He would filibuster his own bill.

149. Often stuff is "quietly added" after debate is closed right BEFORE vote
Like the authorization for certain GOP leaders to inspect anyone's tax returns:

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/004115.php
Doubts remained yesterday over exactly how the controversial tax-return provision -- which allows Appropriations Committee chairmen or their "agents" access to Internal Revenue Service facilities or "any tax returns or return information contained therein" -- got into the omnibus spending bill late last week. House Republicans blamed committee staff aides and the IRS.
Rep. Ernest J. Istook Jr. (R-Okla.), chairman of the Appropriations subcommittee that oversees the IRS, denied any role. Yesterday Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), who had referred to the proposal as the "Istook amendment" Saturday, issued a statement expressing regret for "any confusion my earlier remarks may have created.

And Delay's $1.5 billion pork barrel project, added to the energy bill after it passed committee...(Waxman wrote a letter complaining about it: )

http://thinkprogress.org/2005/07/27/delay-dirty-tricks/
Tom DeLay thinks the federal treasury is his personal piggy bank. DeLay slipped “a $1.5 billion giveaway to the oil industry, Halliburton, and Sugar Land, Texas” into the energy bill.

But this isn’t a normal case of government pork. DeLay has completely dispensed with the democratic process. From a letter Rep. Henry Waxman just sent Speaker Dennis Hastert:

The provision was inserted into the energy legislation after the conference was closed, so members of the conference committee had no opportunity to consider or reject this measure.

The $1.5 billion won’t be administered by the government by a private consortium in DeLay’s district:

The subtitle appears to steer the administration of 75% of the $1.5 billion fund to a private consortium located in the district of Majority Leader Tom DeLay. Ordinarily, a large fund like this would be administered directly by the government.

And for a while no one would admit to who slipped the "Eli Lilly Protection Act" into the Homeland Security Bill: http://www.salon.com/news/col/huff/2002/12/05/whodunit/?sid=1124126
Everyone in D.C., it seems, is utterly baffled as to how an ugly little provision shielding pharmaceutical behemoth Eli Lilly from billions in lawsuits filed by the parents of autistic children made its way, in the 12th hour, into, of all things, the 475-page Homeland Security bill.

He's very slimy.
He's also up to his ears in the shoddy construction quality of Manufactured Housing. In addition to being on the inaugural Senate Manufactured Housing Caucus, he was awarded a Golden Fleece award, with his fellow Alabama Senator, Richard Shelby and an Alabama House member, Bob Aderholt, for taking major bucks from big business. Which big business? Why, Manufactured Housing, of course! The three received more money from that industry than any others in Congress. He then helped put the ball in motion for the Caucus to overhaul the safety standards of the industry based on previous Congressional acts. In the course of this, he introduced S. 2145. The crux of that bill is that the Manufactured Housing industry is now able to regulate product safety itself, free of govermental guidelines.

Oy.

I've been reading a lot about him today. He's truly vile. It seems that the wacky wingnuts didn't put him in office, 'twas just big business.

paraphrase: the 3000 people who died on 9/11 would think the war in Iraq isn't a "so-called war," but a real war.

Bush yesterday: "There was no evidence that Saddam Hussein was involved with the attack of 9/11. I've never said that and never made that case prior to going into Iraq."
