So Bush PERSONALLY Approved Spying On U.S. Citizens
Without a court warrant.

If this isn't an impeachable offense, what the hell is?

Bush Approved Eavesdropping, Official Says

By KATHERINE SHRADER
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush has personally authorized a secretive eavesdropping program in the United States more than three dozen times since October 2001, a senior intelligence official said Friday night.

The disclosure follows angry demands by lawmakers earlier in the day for congressional inquiries into whether the monitoring by the highly secretive National Security Agency violated civil liberties.

"There is no doubt that this is inappropriate," declared Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He promised hearings early next year.

Bush on Friday refused to discuss whether he had authorized such domestic spying without obtaining warrants from a court, saying that to comment would tie his hands in fighting terrorists.

13. I can't fathom it
This should be the top news story all weekend, and all next week and if we had a real press they would be mentioning impeachment on the nightly news. It's fucking unreal.

19. That is my next question...
Where is the media on this!!! This IS an impeachable offense. This should be on all the networks and on all front pages of every newspaper.
Wow, I don't get it either, ruggerson.

snip...

Secondly, the President in authorizing surveillance without seeking a court order has committed a crime. The Federal Communications Act criminalizes surveillance without a warrant. It is an impeachable offense. This was also totally missed by the media.

2. Yup. The buck stops on GWB's desk
...well either that, or he's covering for Cheney who has been authorizing eavesdropping for years without Bush even knowing it.

exact same thing: this is an impeachable offense. I agree. Don't let anyone twist that fact otherwise.

4. It's definitely an impeachable offense.
A local radio host was discussing this earlier today. He said that Nixon left office for far less than this.

But, the political climate is different now. The republicans are too partisan to care about America. All they care about is what's good for republicans and F*** everybody else.

7. Who were the "legal" nit wits who approved this??
He didn't do this on his own -- or perhaps he did?

The question is WHO was spied on?

And WHO benefited from the "intelligence" from the spying?

Where did he get the money -- this sort of spying is damned expensive.

9. A disturbing relevance with the PATRIOT act
Looks like they wanted to make this a common practice...

Thank god there are enough in congress with the testicular fortitude to stand up to this and filibuster these provisions out.

<snip>

"Much of the controversy involved powers granted to law enforcement agencies to gain access to a wealth of personal data, including library and medical records, in secret, as part of investigations into suspected terrorist activity.

The bill also includes a four-year extension of the government's ability to conduct roving wiretaps — which may involve multiple phones — and continues the authority to wiretap "lone wolf" terrorists who may operate on their own, without control from a foreign agent or power.

Yet another provision, which applies to all criminal cases, gives the government 30 days to provide notice that it has carried out a search warrant.

During debate, several Democrats pointed to a New York Times report that Bush had secretly authorized the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on individuals inside the United States without first securing permission from the courts."

23. it may include that, but
this is simply not something a President is supposed to be able/allowed to do with his power. "executive privelege" or whatever euphamism they're calling powers of a king these days just doesn't stretch as far as personally approving domestic spying.

16. Hey! Anyone that's not "with him" is the ENEMY!
Chimperor Disgustsus don't need no court to know that the American people are criminals and his enemies. For him, "probable cause" and "due process" are quaint formalities like the Geneva Conventions and habeas corpus and he's above all that - after all, he was selected by God: his chat pal.

28. Every American should read & re-read the 4th amendment! Then they should
decide whether they really think its okay for the President of the United States to spy on its own people and to actually VIOLATE a constitutional amendment and law.

Un-effing believable....I'm so disgusted about this....We've all suspected that these criminals are capable of this, now we are getting the confirmation.... :grr:

29. You are assuming, of course, that he actually reads
the papers, like Executive Orders, which he signs. Being a bloodthirsty, insecure moron, he, of course, is not responsible for the carnage and crimes he authorizes. At least that is what his defense lawyers can credibly claim.
