Groups sue to protect polar bears

Interesting tactic... Protect polar bears to force the government to curb emissions.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- Three environmental groups sued the federal government Thursday, seeking to protect polar bears from extinction because of disappearing Arctic sea ice.

The lawsuit ... demands that the government take action on a petition environmentalists filed earlier to have polar bears listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act.

Once a species is listed as threatened, the government is barred from doing anything to jeopardize the animal's existence or its habitat.

In the case of the polar bear, the environmentalists hope to force the government to curb U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.

At the store last night, I watched a woman leave her SUV running, lights on, as she went into the liquor store to get a few things. She was in there for almost 10 minutes, all the time her vehichle was running with it's lights on. :wtf:

I just don't think you are going to get people to care enough about polar bears to change their daily habits. They care while they hear the story on the news, but then, poof, it's out of their brain & their convenience takes over.
