TX gov: Boy Scout critics are "fringe groups" and "extremists"
http://www.mysanantonio.com/sharedcontent/APStories/stories/D8EGE56G0.html

Gov. Rick Perry, in Tyler to accept an award from the Boy Scouts, urged supporters of the organization Wednesday to defend it against what he called a relentless attack from extremists.

"I don't know about you, but I don't think there is anything wrong with acknowledging the existence of God in the Boy Scout oath or for that matter, wishing someone Merry Christmas," said Perry, a former Eagle Scout. "Those of us who love scouting, who grew up with it and who support it today, must not be intimidated by the legal scare tactics of fringe groups that treat our children as pawns in a game of political chess

"Our young men and women face more negative influences than many of us did growing up. The deterioration of the culture, mounting peer pressure, drugs and alcohol — they are all at war for our children's souls, and we lose them to these influences at a cost we cannot bear," he said.

But the Scouts, Perry said, are also under assault "by forces that want to sanitize our public discourse of religious references and force acceptance of an extreme agenda," he said

2. How is refusing to donate money to a group you do not support

a "relentless attack from extremists"???

I see the kids selling their popcorn to raise money and I just keep on walking. I cannot support the boyscouts despite having been a scout myself.

The boyscouts of today is not the group I was in as a boy.

7. It's odd
But I managed to grow up in boy scouts without anyone pushing God down my throat or once being told about homosexuality. Could it be a few extremist are ruining the whole fun of being in boy scouts to further their own failed childhoods.

15. Perry is pandering to **repuke** extremists here in TX
Cuz in less then a year he is up for re-election...so we will probably here this bullshit from him more and more often over the next several months.

He knows that places like Dallas, Austin, etc.. are very Dem, so look for him to pull this crap in the more red neck, rural areas.

11. This from the man who said if you don't vote for * you're not a REAL Texan
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 06:34 PM by StellaBlue
I have a story about this.

I used to be a tour guide at the Texas Capitol back in the * days. Once I was doing my usual half-hour duty sitting at a desk near the door of the Senate chamber to answer the questions of any tourists who happened in (who's that in that eight-foot-tall portrait wearing the Confederate uniform? why do the Mexicans in these battle paintings look so swarthy, small, and shifty-eyed?).

On this particular day, the illustrious, newly-ascended Governor Good Hair (Perry to the rest of you) was delivering a speech before presenting Eagle Scout medals (or badges or machetes or whatever they get) to that year's crop. I remember hearing some decidedly Jewish names and being a little surprised, as the rhetoric was SO overwhelmingly WASPy. It was sick. Then everyone rose to say the pledge, and, since I don't believe in institutionalized nationalism, and I *had* to be there for my *job*, I just stayed seated. I am not sure if anyone noticed, but I like to think I horrified at least a couple of old, botoxed, teased-haired Texas socialite mothers. muhahahaha. I also looked around the room absentmindedly during the prayer - but no one should've noticed that, as they should've all been praying themselves. And, yes, the prayer did mention our Lord and savior specifically. :puke:

The whole experience was surprisingly sickening, though. Being a girl, I had never witnessed any Boy Scout rituals.

Just a little story. Maybe it brightens your day just a little to think that, in the midst of all this hypocrisy and backwardness, there are few people like me - always, in almost every room - who neither buy into the brainwashing nor actively participate. I tried my damnedest to retain a 'mocking' expression throughout.

Oh, yeah. For the record, I'm a sixth generation Texan. 1835. I've voted in every single election in which I was eligible, despite living abroad for four years. I love chili, cheese enchiladas, football, and honky tonk. Goodhair can shove it.

12. My husband was some sort of uber-Eagle Scout
as a youth, but we both agree that our son will not be participating in Boy Scouts when he is old enough, unless the group makes some serious changes.

"Those of us who love scouting, who grew up with it and who support it today, must not be intimidated by the legal scare tactics of fringe groups that treat our children as pawns in a game of political chess."

The irony of that quote is that my husband would consider the fundamentalist who have taken over the Scouts to be the fringe group who is using our children as pawns in a political game.

13. My fiancee was too
I informed him that if we ever have kids and they are boys, they will not be Boy Scouts unless a fundamental change takes place. This is serious enough to me to put my foot down on the issue. He agreed with me.

Why are the Boy Scouts so vile and the Girl Scouts so cool?? What's the deal?
