RightWingNuts Boycott Stores to Stop Charitable Donations to Girls Clubs
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 12:14 PM by JPZenger
NPR this morning had a story about how a group of right wing nuts are trying to start a boycott of American Girls Stores. It is because American Girls makes charitable donations to Girls Incorporated. Girls Inc. used to be named the Girls Clubs of America. The wing nuts say that Girls Inc. advocates against restrictions on abortions and promotes lesbianism. I believe that would really surprise the young girls who are served by the clubs, most of which are in poor neighborhoods.

Here a link that describes what Girls Inc. really does.

The NPR story was deficient in giving too much air time to the wing nuts, while not refuting the false claims or giving any information on the good that Girls Inc. does. NPR didn't interview anyone from Girls Inc.

The sad thing is that, according to the story, American Girls will probably stop their donations to Girls Inc. to shut these wing nuts up. Then they will feel they have won.

This boycott reminds me of a failed boycott against Hershey Foods Corp. A group of ministers were angry that the Harrisburg PA airport wasn't hiring more minority contractors. An executive of Hershey Entertainment, a completely separately company, was on the board of the airport. So they tried to boycott Hershey Foods, which had no connection to the airport except for having a plane based there.

1. ...and plant brochures telling the girls how to become polygamists,
no doubt.

"Oh, look at the little pre-pubescent darlings in their plain jumpers! They are so good with the needlework, even though they don't seem to get much sleep at night..."

This is a great organization that empowers girls to be the best they can. Shame on NPR for not interviewing anyone from Girls Inc.

Kind of in a way reminds me of Girl Scouts. I'm tired of these selfish assholes ruining everything!

4. Aren't they in place so that girls do not loose self-esteem as teens?
Which is a plague on the world?

10. Like with the MBAs - perhaps they see self-esteem as in competition
with religion. MBAs and managers of corporations sure seem to see their owners, consumers, & regulators as people to annihilate.

5. Then lets start boycotting any organization that bows to their BS
We have to start fighting fire with fire. If they see where the real economic clout is (the Reasonable People of America), they'll pay attention to all their customers, not merely the wacko
right-wing.

8. Yes
Email, call, fax and tell them you're disappointed and won't be shopping there anymore if you do.

6. UGH!
I read about that a while ago. I think American Girls are great. So much better than Barbie that's for sure!! I can't stand their crap! People have to stand up to them and tell them NO! Treat them like the children they're behaving as!

11. I heard one report about this that mentioned American Girl
only had a year long deal with Girls, Inc. and that year is about to end. The report sounded like both outfits went into it knowing it was strictly a one year deal; no mention of a renewal option was made. The problem is, once the year ends and AG doesn't renew (stressing again that not renewing apparently the plan all along) the wingnuts will claim a victory that wasn't really there.
