Would you send hate mail to an injured soldier?? Me neither!!!
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 12:00 PM by progressivebydesign
http://www.komotv.com/stories/40769.htm

Found this story on the local tv website today. Seems that an injured soldier received a Christmas card that said "PLEASE DIE". This is disturbing on so many levels: 1) it's unbelievably despicable for whomever sent the card. I'm trying to fathom what would compel someone to do that to an injured soldier. 2) you absolutely KNOW that this story will become part of the pro-war script for decades to come 3) it was never reported where that card came from... was it from someone he knew? was it from an completely ignorant teen trying to be funny? Was it from a disturbed person?

I'm just putting this story out here because I know DU, and I know that not one of us would EVER entertain the thought of sending hate mail to soldiers, and of course, to injured soldiers. Last time we did a military roll call, we found out how many of the DUers have served or are serving our country right now.

A pox on the person who sent that hateful card... for whatever purpose.

ON EDIT: Did some checking, and the card was sent by a kid, as I had suspected. This has become a cause celebre in the Faux News and Michelle Malkin circles. On her site, if you can stomach it, there is a copy of the card apparently penned by a kid. Stupid sick kid.

10. that entered my mind.. but I highly doubt it.
I think the soldier was probably busy recovering from being shot, and not mailing himself cards. Not to say that there haven't been instances proven where supposed attacks on returning soldiers were fabricated for various reasons. this one seems legit, and really disgusting. As the DUer pointed out in a reply here, when you have people like the Phelps group out of Kansas protesting at soldier's funerals, I'd probably tend to believe it was either wackos like that, or an ignorant teen who was asked to write cards along with a class, and thought they'd be funny. They're not.

3. Unless they show the card
or there's a followup where the cops arrest someone for terroristic threatening (I think telling someone to die would fit this charge), I'd think this was just something made up. If not, I'd bet it came from a rw whacko--remember it is that rw "Christian" church from KS that pickets soldier's funerals.

18. If you are referring to Phelps....
He claims to be from the other major party (not going to say it). However, Republicans are very fond of registering as dems just to vote against the most winnable dem in the primary, and then vote Republican in the election.

I would say that this came from a Republican trying to rally support for their accusations that their opponents hate the troops.

8. I don't believe for a second anyone of the liberal persuasion
sent this. At the same time, I have no doubt that, if in fact this was sent by anyone, it was sent by a freeper. That is, it was intentionally sent by a member of FR with the intent to make the anti-war folks look real bad. FR creatures have been obsessively manic about the demonstraters at Walter Reed. They would do something like this in a heartbeat.

9. maybe trumped up by the radio host?
i have no idea who kirby is but it sounds like an "O'Reillyesque" stunt. Radio talk show sets this up, then rides the "support the troops" momentum onto local newspapers and tv playing the hero?

just speculating.

11. Nasty debate about this on another board.
I was part of a nasty debate on this on another board. http://www.disentity.com/viewtopic.php?t=1588&start=140 A conservative insisted that the card had to have been sent by a lefty.

21. here's a link that should clear that up
http://euphoria.jarkolicious.com/journal/2005/12/05/1400/ (sorry it's for a right wing blog) but it explains that it was sent by a kid, and if you're brave enuff (and have plenty of barf bags) there is a copy of the card on Michelle Malkin's site.

12. I'm going with the ignorant, angry, youth scenario.
My take is that it was penned by an angry, bored, or stupid, youngster who was told to write a christmas card to our injured troops as part of a class or group. Being the parent of a teen, and a recent teen, I've seen some pretty cruel and stupid things out there.

Sad that liberals will be blamed for this... as I've never seen more than a handful of people on DU that were hostile toward the troops, and that is out of 80k liberal posters.

but seriously. a lot of people are in a lot of pain over this war. on both sides. everybody should accept that. people in pain lash out. on both sides.

15. In all liklihood, IF such a card was sent, it was sent by a Repuke
in an attempt to rile up the sheep.

Just like the phoney War on Christmas like no XMAS dress code in Plano, or school kids not being able to sing the "Christian" lyrics to Silent Night in Wisconsin.

Its called propagand folks, and we are up to our eyeballs in it.

http://euphoria.jarkolicious.com/journal/2005/12/05/1400/ I found that while googling the story, and it adds a bit of depth to the story. It also mentions that Faux News and Michelle Malkin jumped on the bandwagon. Sorry to send you to a right wing blog to find this all out... a copy of the card is at Malkin's site, supposedly, if you can stomach it.

Seems it was a kid who wrote the card. How sad for the soldier to receive something so awful... but I feel better knowing that it was indeed an ignorant or disturbed child who did it.

...and what's the difference between the two?

His ex-wife is a bitch now, and Karl Rove will become a bitch in prison.

My kids would be grounded until sometime after graduation if they pulled something like this.
