Sununu is speaking against it now. There are profound threats within this bill to our civil liberties.

6. This is an important issue in NH - Sununu even went so far as to submit

a bill with Kerry in Dec2003 to overturn the more onerous and unnecessary parts of the Patriot Act.

Isn't it interesting that a bi-partisan move in the Senate against the Patriot Act received NO ATTENTION from the media, whatsoever, in Dec 2003?

That is how the media works to protect Bush and keep the public unaware of what Democrats, even working with some Republicans, are REALLY doing.

7. Still time to contact our Senators, ask them to vote against cloture!!!
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 12:57 PM by Wordie
Do it as a way of celebrating the birthday of the completion of the ratification of our Bill of Rights, December 15, 1791.

11. Here is what I wrote. Feel free to copy/modify it to send to your Senator.
Please vote AGAINST cloture of the Patriot Act Reauthorization!

Dear Senator <Your Senator's Name Here>:

As you are aware, the Patriot Act Reauthorization bill is on the verge of approval, but there is an important bi-partisan effort underway to address some of the portions of the bill that constitute a danger to our civil liberties. I urge you to join in that bi-partisan effort and vote against cloture.

Further, in order to resolve the remaining issues, a 90-day extension of the bill has been proposed. Such an extension would have the benefit of continuing the protections the bill provides, while allowing the debate to continue in order to fully resolve the problems of the bill. I urge you as well to support the extension.

Thank you for your consideration of my request, and for your representation of myself and the other citizens who form your constituency. We are depending on you to protect our civil rights.

Sincerely,

<Your Name Here>

9. Another republican speaking against cloture! Good! Sen. Craig (R-Idaho)
Edited on Thu Dec-15-05 12:36 PM by Wordie
rebutting strongly the idea that those in opposition are against the Patriot Act altogether. Making the point that only the few sections dangerous to civil rights are opposed. This is an amazing debate!

And one really has to admire those republicans siding with the dems on this, against their own leadership. Kudos to them.

13. Who the hell wound up Orin Hatch? He's
making me want to puke. Been talking forever. And what the heck was all that shit about stem cells that Frist brought up? What was the reason for bringing that up. They knew Harken would object.

14. It appears that the segway between issues was not very well defined.
I noticed the same thing. I thought Hatch was speaking on stem cell research, and that was what the debate at that time was about. But all of a sudden, off he goes about the Patriot Act. And you're completely right; he was all wound up. But, then, I think he usually is.
