The Legionaries of Christ
Novices Accuse Catholic Order of Intimidation, Pressure

The Hartford Courant/June 10, 1996
By Gerald Renner
The Legionaries of Christ, a militaristically styled order of Roman Catholic priests based in Connecticut, calls recruiting candidates for the priesthood "capturing vocations.''

The language is more than figurative, say several men who accepted invitations last year to join the Legionaries' novice training program.

They say that superiors of the tightly controlled, boot camp-like training program would not release them when they decided that priesthood in the Legion was not for them.

They say that the Legionaries tried to manipulate and intimidate them psychologically, refused to return their civilian clothes and subjected them to such intense pressure to stay that they felt they had no choice but to plan escapes and flee.

The Legionaries, who have their U.S. headquarters in Orange, refused to respond to inquiries from The Courant regarding the former novices' allegations. The order declines most requests for interviews, even from Catholic periodicals.

Requests for an interview and questions in writing were directed last month to the order's national director, the Rev. Anthony Bannon, through his secretary, Brother John Curran. Curran accused The Courant of stirring up "scandal'' and said he did not expect Bannon to respond.

Minnesota archbishop bars Legionaries from his archdiocese

By Jerry Filteau
Catholic News Service

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- In a letter made public by an Internet posting in December, Archbishop Harry J. Flynn of St. Paul-Minneapolis informed parish heads that the Legionaries of Christ are "not to be active in any way in the archdiocese."

He also instructed them that the Legionaries' lay associate movement, Regnum Christi, is to be "kept completely separate from all activities of the parishes and the archdiocese." The lay organization should not be allowed to use parish or archdiocesan property for any meeting or program, he said.

The St. Paul-Minneapolis Archdiocese is not the first to bar the Legionaries, a religious order of priests whose approach to ministry and methods of vocations recruitment and seminary formation have been a source of controversy. The Diocese of Columbus, Ohio, has had a similar policy toward the Legionaries and Regnum Christi since October 2002.

With his Nov. 23 circular letter to pastors and parish life administrators, Archbishop Flynn enclosed a copy of a letter he wrote the previous month to Father Anthony Bannon, national director of the Legionaries of Christ.

In that letter he expressed concern that, in meetings and correspondence with Father Bannon over several years, his efforts to learn more about the Legionaries and Regnum Christi and their ministry in St. Paul-Minneapolis brought responses that "tended to be vague and ambiguous, characterized by generalizations about intent and policy."

it's worth doing a search on the name of that group, and on the name of that guest.

5. Legionaries of Christ makes Opus Dei look like the Rotary Club
They are freaks of the highest order.

I am actually acquainted with someone that was sexually abused by the top freak and founder of the order in Mexico.

Legionaries of Christ is bad, bad news.
Why does it not surprise me that O'Reilly affiliates himself with this group?
Birds of a feather....

posts something new and even crazier. Where are these people coming from and why is this happening? Why would people want to live in this way?

I mean did the millenium mark the beginning a new dark age of ignorance and war?

all catholic religious orders have to be "licensed" (for lack of a better word) by rome.

john curran and his missionaries are not!

O'Reilly would do well to have guests like Bishop Gumbleton

* Alongtime national and international activist in the peace movement, BishopGumbleton is a founding member of Pax Christi USA and an outspoken criticof the sanctions against Iraq.
Hehas appeared on numerous radio and television programs, and has publishednumerous articles and reports.
