Bush takes responsibility for faulty intelligence....
and then goes on to say that even though we know today that the intelligence is bad, i.e., Iraq had no WMD's, there was no tie to Al Qaeda, and there was no nuclear program, that he still would have sent us to war.

This is an incredible revelation.

So what Bush said today is that we would have gone to war regardless of the intelligence!

The intelligence meant nothing. So every reason he gave for starting this war... based on our faulty intelligence was a lie. And today he essentially admitted it.

So what then was our real reason for going to war, if it was not the intelligence.

If we knew today that Iraq had no weapons, had no ties to 911, and was not a threat... what would be the reason for going to war?

Democracy? Give me a break.

1. It's all about the business profits
That's why he'd go again. Never mind all the lives he lost and pain and suffering.

2. Bush says that if he knew then what he knows now ...
... he would still go into Iraq.

I say that if Bush Sr. knew then what he knows now, he probably would have worn a condom.

7. Yes it's ridiculous, but it works
Today's "candid" speech by the idiot is an example of very slick marketing by the pigman - rove.
Absurd? totally - but it works on the sheeple and the junta knows that.
Just watch the ratings rise. The moronic people of this country will hear the idiot and say: "See? he's just like us. He makes mistakes and admits them." It's a brilliant move by the pigman. Brilliant because absurdity is the norm in America in 2005.
BTW, anyone have any recommendations on another country to live? Seriously. Has to be warm weather, though.

8. Sort of like saying yes he picked the wrong pocket but if he had to do it
all over he'd have done the same. Sure, that makes us all feel better. Perfectly sensible in Bushworld.

10. CBS Evening News was all ga-ga over this
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 09:27 PM by Tactical Progressive
It was their first segment. Bush finally admitted that 'there were mistakes made' in the intelligence. Except that he's already said that everywhere and nobody buys it because it is for all intents and purposes a lie; what was done was done on purpose. Plus he said that he 'takes responsiblity'. Except that he's already said that too and it gets no traction because it's nothing more than a generic 'I'm in charge so technically it's my responsibility, even though I personally had nothing to do with it.' acceptance of responsibility. It wasn't him taking responsibility for what he actually did.

And that's the crux of the matter. Bush and Cheney and Rice and Powell and the whole sordid gang purposefully used bad intelligence, mischaracterized intelligence and flat out lied about WMD and also Iraq-al Qaeda terrorist ties to repeatedly, relentlessly lie America into invading Iraq. They did that, themselves, on purpose, using bad intelligence, twisting CIA intelligence with Cheney's six visits to the CIA, forming their own Office of Special Projects intelligence unit when that wasn't enough and used discredited nuke fears and torture information, not to mention liar-in-residence Chalabi's propaganda. They did it, it wasn't done to them or even just by others without their knowing. They intentionally set up an elaborate charade by themselves to start a phony war.

But to CBS, the now conservative-coddling CBS, Bush's admitting that there 'were mistakes made' along with his non-acceptance-of-what-they-really-did was a revelation of how Bush has finally answered his critics. Smiling Bob Sheiffer, the soothing, grandfatherly face of CBS's new Republican-friendly propaganda machine was pleased as punch. The media wants so badly to find the flimsiest excuse, even if they have to help concoct one, to get past what everybody in America but the media knows and admits: that Bush and Cheney flat-out lied us into war. They think they have it now with the combination of 'mistakes were made' and 'I take responsibility' in one speech. Never mind that the 'mistakes' were intentional and that the responsibility is personal and that Bush hasn't, nor will ever, admit either of those facts let alone both. The media just wants to get past it. You can practically hear them champing at the bit every time they see a chance to get Bush over this. They even trotted out some Dem Congressman I've never heard of who said it was good Bush said it, then effectively painted the Dem leadership, 'the president's critics', as playing politics by not being satisfied. As if there were any satisfaction in any of his half-assed, deceptive excuses.

I didn't see the other nightly news reports on this but I imagine they were pretty much the same, as they all seem to pretty much echo whatever Bush apologisms the journalistic community can tacitly collude on as 'conventional wisdom'. I doubt it will convince the public, but they do what they can to convince themselves and put it out there for whatever it might be worth. I'm sure that if Bush gets a blip up in the polls, for whatever reason, they'll take the opportunity to again reinforce their propaganda that Bush 'owns up to his mistakes' and has the personal integrity to 'take responsibility', even though no such thing is the case. To me what it's worth is in noting how corrupt the mainstream media has become, which I think the general public is becoming increasingly aware of thanks to media gamesmanship like this.
