So, for Christmas, my Republican brother has asked for...
...a "scary book on global warming" cause he says doesn't know much about it.

Well, knock me over with a melted polar icecap. This is a surprise, coming from a 2-time Bush voter.

So, can anyone recommend a good global warming primer?

Boggle,

The Plaid Adder

3. Won't 'Day After Tomorrow' confuse the facts with fiction?
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 07:38 PM by niallmac
I know for myself the most stirring thing I ever saw about the environment was Al Gores talk on the subject complete with slides. Once you get over thinking "JESUS CHRIST WHY DIDN'T YOU TALK LIKE THAT DURING THE CAMPAIGN?!" I think you would agree his knowledge of our environmentally mad policies is awsome.

19. If nothing else, it give a good slap in the face to Cheney ....
.. and just tell them that's it a 'speeded up' version of what could happen... but include the book mentioned to go with it.

9. "Day After Tomorrow"
I definetly wouldn't recommend that, if you want to convince him of the validity of Global Warming.

4. The Discovery of Global Warming by Spencer R. Weart
The Discovery of Global Warming

Spencer R. Weart

In 2001 a panel representing virtually all the world's governments and climate scientists announced that they had reached a consensus: the world was warming at a rate without precedent during at least the last ten millennia, and that warming was caused by the buildup of greenhouse gases from human activity. The consensus itself was at least a century in the making. The story of how scientists reached their conclusion--by way of unexpected twists and turns and in the face of formidable intellectual, financial, and political obstacles--is told for the first time in The Discovery of Global Warming. Spencer R. Weart lucidly explains the emerging science, introduces us to the major players, and shows us how the Earth's irreducibly complicated climate system was mirrored by the global scientific community that studied it.

5. Try this one:

Or some other book written by a scientist. I would not recomment a Hollywood movie since even well intentioned ones tend to be over dramatized. (And most Republicans hate Hollywood).

20. I just finished that one. Shameful pandering to pseudo-science.
As a Senior Research Scientist (yep - that was my 'status' job title) in one of the National Laboratories for five years, I saw altogether too much over-accommodating science-for-hire. It's truly amazing what one can do with statistical 'assumptions.'

16. I agree, Al's book would blow his republican mind
He does a good job summarizing the issue from a political point of view, and the science is accurate as well (although now probably a little dated).

13. i would also give him "Crimes against Nature" by RFK Jr.....
because it looks like he's trying to find a reason to hate GWB, and that should give him a few.
I think it's gotta be out in paperback now, so toss it in his stocking too.

15. You don't know how much
better you have just made me feel! I'm feeling depressed today about the state of the world. Being surrounded by freeper-types and fundies with their flags and crosses and jingoistic bumper stickers everywhere I go had me down today. Global warming is the most worrisome of all the issues I clash with my neighbors about. And it's the only one that usurps all the rest in importance IMO. If we don't do something about it, we're toast.

Yesterday I saw a bumper sticker that looked like the classic white and green "Love Your Mother" sticker on a big freeper-type pickup truck but that's not what it said. It said "Stop Global Whining." :banghead: Knowing that there are some Republicans who are actually starting to take global warming seriously gives me a speck of hope today.
