Wow - Ford backed down
They are not going to refrain from advertising in gay/lesbian oriented media or supporting gay/lesbian events. More here: http://americablog.blogspot.com/2005/12/we-won.html

As a straight male I am glad to see Ford not give in to the wingers/crazies on this. Big props to John Aravosis (sp?) at AmericaBlog.

Not that this excuses Ford's intention to get rid of 30,000 workers, though.

1. AFA has nothing on their website about this yet
wonder if they're still claiming victory

4. The AFA is still going to get huge money out of this
They will cry victim and use it as a rallying cry to raise more money.

Meanwhile, all of the "gay money" Ford gets will go straight to the Republicans anyway.

2. Still boycotting Ford for other reasons. Too little, too late
They're just going to take "gay money" and give it to anti-gay, anti-environment, anti-worker, anti-American Republicans anyway.

Unlike the fundies who think Wal-Mart, for example, can fuck people over as much as you like so long as they say "Merry Christmas," we need to have saner priorities than whether or not a company advertises in The Advocate.

Ford can still go fuck themselves.

9. gotta ask -- which car manufacturer doesnt give to repubs?
If that's the standard for deciding which car manufacturer to patronize, is there any car that meets the test? For that matter, does any bicycle manufacturer meet the test?

12. Only Ford and GM are big Republican donors.
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 05:35 PM by IanDB1
BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke AG)
Nissan Motor Co., Ltd
Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd)
Toyota Motor Corporation
Volkswagen AG
Honda Motor Co., Ltd.
Kia Motors Corporation

All of those companies above made zero political contributions.

And Toyota has a much better environmental record. For example, there's the cute little Toyota Prius Hybrid that I drive.

Hyundai Motor Company only donated $1,258 to Republicans

Ford Motor Company donated $420,622 to Republicans

General Motors Company donated $415,365 to Republicans

18. I don't think that's necessarily so
Intuitively, I would expect car companies and their managers to give more heavily to repubs. I'm not sure how "buyblue" gets its figures, but opensecrets.org has some pretty telling information about soft money an PAC contributions attributable to other car companies and their managers. Moreover, keep in mind that merely because some of these other companies don't have their own PACs doesn't meant that they aren't funnelling a lot of money to other PACs,such as the National Auto Dealers Assn PAC, that give overwhelmingly to repubs:

5. Why allow two weeks of disinformation?
Edited on Wed Dec-14-05 05:23 PM by Flubadubya
I don't get it. Why would Ford wait two weeks to clarify this? Whey would they allow this misinformation to go unrefuted for so long? Something's rotten in Denmark... or "Ford-ville". I'm dumbfounded.

11. This is important.
That's absolutely right. Ford thought it could get away with this. And the gay community fought back.

I don't expect this will slow down the AFA and other hatemongers. But I hope it sends a signal to other businesses that this kind of shit...making deals with hatemongers...won't go unchallenged.

14. First Microsoft, then Ford. Which company will fall next for the
religious reich only to have to back pedal out again?

When will they learn the religious reich can't muster a meaningful boycott to save their lives??

15. I wonder how American Girl dolls are selling
this season. The fundies had their knickers all atwist about the company's support of a foundation or group that promoted positive self image for girls, including <gasp> lesbians.

Fundie "boycotts" are a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

16. Well, MN ChimpH8R, I just proudly bought an American Girl doll ..
for my nine-year-old, Her Royal Highness, Beloved Daughter.

Well, actually, I had no choice ... it had better show up or else.

Husband said when he ordered it, it seemed like they were doing good business.

If you'd like, you can go to The American Fundie Association webpage and click on the link there. That way, they'll see where the "referer link" was:
