The commission, known by its acronym UNMOVIC, is charged with dismantling Iraq’s chemical, biological and long-range missile programs. It has recently been limited to studying satellite imagery to keep track of equipment with civilian and military uses.
For some time, Iraq has demanded that UNMOVIC, which is funded with Iraqi oil revenue, be closed. The government says the current leadership does not pose the threat that Saddam Hussein’s regime did. snip
Inspectors from UNMOVIC left Iraq just before the March 2003 US-led war that toppled Saddam Hussein, and the United States barred them from returning.
