READ THIS! Just got hit with PayPal "phishing" email from spoof address.
Watch out!!! It's been reported as a new PayPal phishing entity that began on December 9, 2005.

This is apparently coming from a German and/or Spanish website. The message has the PayPal logo on it and looks very official.

The subject line of the message says, "Notification of Limited Account Access" and directed the recipient to another bogus link. My husband became suspicious and didn't finish the link.

Here's some information from PayPal about this:

https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=xpt/general/SecuritySpoof-outside

There are crooks all around the world, aren't there????

In peace,

Radio Lady

1. There are definitely crooks everywhere.
I received a fake paypal e-mail a while back and reported it to paypal security. I recently received a similar one that said it was from ebay. Never give account or personal information.

2. I got that suspicious email several months ago, too. Also watch out...
...for phishing emails with official-looking AMAZON.COM logo, etc. I received one a few weeks back and amazon confirmed it wasn't from them. Amazon will never tell you that you suddenly have limited access to your account or that they need to verify your credit card number, password, etc., when you are not in the middle of transacting a purchase on their actual website.

Far too many fraudsters out there! Be very careful! Good thing you didn't follow the link!

(The eBay phishing email I got was automatically suspicious because the whole page was an active html link - anywhere on the page that I put the mouse brought up a hand icon with the extended pointing finger = active link.)

3. I've been getting that same phish...
... three to four times a week for the last 14 months. It's an old one, but I guess they keep growing their mailing list so there are people who've never seen it before.

5. I've gotten dozens of them. From bogus "eBay" too.
Being a non-greedy cynical old bastard, I never open up that kind of shit.
:D

6. Paypal is NOT a secure site!
Am currently having a problem with them....

I had a BRAND NEW new credit card that was used on ONE occasion.

That ONE occasion was at PAYPAL. The card was not used ANYWHERE else nor was it out of my possession at ANY time!

One month after I used my NEW credit card on ONE occasion at PAYPAL, my credit card was FRAUDULENTLY used on the East Coast at Eckerd Drug stores. The thieves also attempted to make several on-line purchases with various merchants.

PAYPAL was the ONLY one that had my credit card info. I do NOT respond to emails from unidentified strangers so I was NOT 'spoofed' or 'phished'.

The East Coast thieves got my credit card information from PAYPAL since PAYPAL was the ONLY one who had that information.

Since my PAYPAL account was BREACHED, I have deleted ALL financial information from the site since I can NOT TRUST it any longer.

===========
Excuse the excessive use of caps...this is from the *third* email I had to send to these idiots before they grasped what had occured. My writing skills are excellent but, regretfully, their reading comprehension isn't!

8. Paypal is as secure as most. Have you checked for a trojan?
Edited on Sun Dec-11-05 12:41 AM by WePurrsevere
Trojans are sadly fairly easy to pick up and often are keystroke loggers.

Of course it's possible that paypal has had a breach but I'd suggest running a few trojan sniffers, spybot, antiviral to be absolutelu sure it's not something you've accidentally picked up in your surfing.

Far be it from me to infer that Paypal is perfect but I've used PayPal for many years as a buyer and a seller and ::knock on wood:: without any trouble. If something like this were to happen to me I'd run all kinds of cleaners as well as do what you've done until I knew what exactly had happened.

Also... do you have their phone number? If not let me know since I do and sometimes it's easier and faster to get results that way.

10. No trojans or other malware - thanks for asking!
I keep a clean and secure machine. All open ports are closed so I'm running in Stealth Mode and "invisible" to potential hackers, firewall running, Norton Security current and fully enabled. The problem with PayPal didn't originate from my end.

btw - anyone wanting to check their open ports for security purposes can do so here:

12. You probably allow for file sharing
You should probably turn that off. Aren't there suggestions on the security site to guide you?

16. I concur
A trojan or a fake site are far more likely to be the reason for a leak.

7. Please.never EVER click a link in a Paypal or eBay email! Forward them to:
spoof@paypal.com or spoof@ebay.com. They trace this stuff and they'll verify that it's a spoof and/or phishing for you. If you ever have any questions about whether your account has a problem go there directly and always verify that you're at a secure site with https as a part of the url.

Sadly there are a lot of crooks but if you are careful, use anti-spyware, anti-viral and common sense you can have a secure and pleasant experience using ebay, paypal and other honest websites.

9. Pay Pal & E-bay will rarely if ever contact you.......
unless you signed up for news letters or other junk mailings. They NEVER will ask for passwords or other account info. I find that running the cursor across a suspicious link is one way to see if it legit. I usually just dump all of them, if they really want to get a hold of you they can. I've never had a problem using either since 1999.

13. I have been receiving those for about a year now.
There also are ones from banks. I click on the links and fill in the blanks with obscenities. I know that they are fake when they ask for a password and user name and I use "dumbass" and "asshole" and it goes through.
