Invading Iraq in the first place was a big, big mistake. But trying to remake it from scratch was an even bigger one. When it became a nation-building mission, that's when it really turned into a quagmire.
We NEVER should have invaded. If Bush just HAD to invade Iraq, he should have asked our military to do just three things:
1) Kill or capture Saddam, his sons and any of the top political and military leadership who we strongly suspected of serious crimes... then shipped them to The Hague.
2) Search for WMDs.
3) Declare victory and then hand the keys to a general or colonel willing to accept a monthly check from the CIA in return for playing nice with us.
Does this sound cynical? Well, it is. But the outcome would have been better for us, and, really, no worse than neutral for the Iraqi people.
