1. I will be so glad when people will stop trying to draft celebrities
for elected office. There are too many passionate, well-qualified 'normal' folks who need to be running. Many of them are here at the DU.

5. yes, but
Yes, but the problem is that well-qualified "normal" folks don't get voters' attention. Or have the money to run for office. Politics has traditionally been for the elite. The trend now is just going to shift from a small circle of elite rich white men to the elite in terms of pop culture. At least with celebrities running people become more interested in the process (maybe).

4. Good. I love it when the Repigs fight amongst themselves!
As far as Gibson is concerned, did they even ask him if he wanted to run before bringing up his name? I don't think so.

6. They look to a Gimmick to help sell their despicable agenda.
Gimmick
From Wiped, the free encyclopedia.
Jump to: navigation, search

A gimmick is a unique or quirky special feature that makes something "stand out" from its contemporaries. Product gimmicks are sometimes considered mere novelties, and not really that relevant to the product's functioning, even earning negative connotations. However, some seemingly trivial gimmicks of the past have evolved into useful, permanent features.

Finding a successful gimmick for an otherwise mundane product is often an important part of the marketing process. For example, toothbrushes are often given various gimmicks, such as bright colors, easy-grip handles, or color-changing bristles so they appear more exciting to consumers. This is often done when trying to appeal to children, who often get more excited about the gimmick than the product.

7. Glad they mentioned Bob Mulholland
Edited on Fri Dec-09-05 05:56 AM by onager
I remember 1992, when the incredibly slimy right-wing loon Bruce Herschenson ran for the Senate. Herschenson was a sort of earlier and milder version of Bill O'Reilly on local Los Angeles TV. He really thought his election was sewn up and in the bag. He had everything going for him: media recognition due to his 400 years as a pet Repub "journalist," a load of money from the National GOP, he was friends with St. Reagan, etc.

For months we had to suffer with his smarmy, arrogant campaigning, and its subtext of: "I can't lose, I'm running against this silly little liberal woman." It was just great when his strip-club visit came out. But as I remember, that wasn't a major reason he lost. Boxer was a much more effective campaigner, and gave the impression that she truly cared about the people voting for her. (Gee, I wonder why that difference was so obvious...)

Bob Mulholland is one of the few Dem leaders who has nailed our party's problem in a great one-liner. It went something like this:

"I learned one thing when I was serving with the infantry in Vietnam: when people are shooting at you, you shoot back."

Most of the Dem "leadership" needs to have that message tattooed on their foreheads. You don't try to out-Jesus the GOP, you don't copy their platform, you don't suck up to them a la Lieberman. The first time they start bellowing that moth-eaten "family values" crap, you drag the skeletons out of the GOP closets and rattle them all over the media. That way, you put the bastards on notice that they can expect massive retaliation if they try to play the "morals" card. And as Robert Penn Warren noted years ago in All The King's Men, EVERYBODY running for office has something buried in the closet.

8. The Road Warrior versus the Running Man.......
this will be a vicious, bloody, battle royal, won't it? I sincerely hope the people of California pluck the stars from their eyes before electing another Governor. Enough of this Hollywood, tough guy bullshit already!

10. After Californians have realized their mistake...
...and turned against Ahnuld. How eager do you think they'll be to elect another celebrity based mainly on name recognition? If, this time, many more Californians pay more attention to Gibson's politics than the "ain't it cool to have a celebrity as governor" factor, then Gibson is toast. He's way too conservative for that bluest of blue state. If 'Pub primary voters are dumb enough to nominate Gibson they deserve the crushing they'll get on election day.

Ahnuld is toast too. Is he even polling above 30% approval? Any Dem we put up for California governor in '06 should win easily.

PS - My apologies to any Californians on the board. I don't mean to paint you all with the same brush, but last time too many of your fellow Californians voted for the wrong guy for the wrong reasons.
