Let's keep this list limited to only those currently serving in the Senate.

Wish a few more of our senators would show the same backbone.

How many times can he say " God, I was an idiot, I'm sorry?"

9. true....
It still bothers me though...

We never seemed to forgive Strom Thurmond, even though he apologized and had hired African-American aides.....

I guess that I am holding Byrd to the same standards that I held Thurmond to.

31. and what about his homophobic remarks?
and not very positive gay rights record?

I'm amazed to see Byrd with a solid plurality of the votes of this poll. True, he has been a strong voice against Bush, but I think most people here are ignoring his whole record.

For that matter, Kennedy and Feingold have been very vocal against Bush too... and they both have wonderful records.

16. My admiration for Byrd has grown in recent months.
At the same time my list of Senators eligible for such a vote has shrunk enormously lately.

I also like Harkin and Graham and Boxer.

Reportedly taking a high paying lobbyist position. His seat will be up for grabs. Mary is one of the good ones, IMO. Breaux breaks ranks too often... but hey, if you're looking for a non-partisan senator, Breaux may be your guy.

17. No Birds Please!
Your all too young to know Byrd was a white-rober.

Your just voting Byrd now because he is currently standing up to Bush like few others (save Kennedy).

C'mon, we are talking overall record here.

It's Feingold hands down from the (yes worthless) campaign finance bill onward (and long before).

I am from Wisconsin, and even if I wasn't, man, Russ is cut from good moral timber ALL AROUND!

25. Byrd, white robes and all, is from another time.......
........and can be forgiven for past transgressions just as others can be when for voting for their constituency instead of some ideological strawman. I don't see that the question addresses overall record. It simply asks who one's favorite senator is. Right now Byrd is at the top of my short list which includes Feingold, Kennedy, Kerry and Chafee. He certainly has told the oppostion whatfor recently. Goodness knows I am appalled at my own congresspeople so I have to cheer for those from other states.

and Barbara Mikulski are fantastic - very lucky to have two Maryland senators who vote the way I want.

I also greatly admire Byrd and Kennedy - real Democrats (and that means, unlike Daschle, they not only vote the right way BUT THEY SCREAM IT FROM THE MOUNTAINTOPS!)

My senator. She has never capitulated to the right and she never voted for the Iraq War resolution. Now there is a campaign by the right wing gestapo in California to get her senate seat in the next election. An article in today's LA Times, states that the GOP are so confident with Arnold's "win" that they have their sights set on Senator Boxer's seat next. Woe is us.
