CBS News Poll: Kerry would defeat Bush if election were held today
About a year too late.

41% would vote for Kerry
36% would vote for Bush
13% would vote for "someone else"
6% would not bother voting at all.

Bush would lose the support of 3% of those who said they voted for him last year to Kerry. No Kerry supporters would switch to Bush but 13% said they would support another candidate. Among voters who either didn't vote in '04 or voted for another candidate or refused to say who they voted for Kerry leads Bush 34-11 percent.

1. Didn't the polls say Kerry would beat * the day of the election?
I mean before the changed exit polls even?

5. No most polls had Bush ahead narrowly
Kerry was ahead in most polls until he was swift boated. Zogby was the only major pollster which had Kerry ahead as I remember it.

4. Of what importance is this?
Is this news? Do we need a poll to know this? Do we need to waste resources on this kind of question? Of what good does knowing this now, other than to be able to say, "I told you so."

6. Wait a minute. Bush's approval is 40% but only 36% would vote
for him? WTF?

9. That's not too uncommon
for instance in November, 1964 Lyndon Johnson had a 72% approval rating but won the election against Barry Goldwater with 61%--some people may think he is doing a good job but may think that the other guy may do a better job.

14. Wouldn't a more logical explanation be that 11% of the people
who approved of Johnson didn't bother to vote? It was not a close election after the daisy commercial. Goldwater supporters were very gung-ho, Dems were still mourning JFK.

7. Kerry already defeated Bush in 2004 ...
... If CBS had bothered reporting and/or investigating what happened in Ohio and other states, thanks to Diebold, they would have known that a year ago.

15. Kerry is either one of "them"
or is a coward

he wimped out and betrayed all of us who fought to overthrow the bush junta in 2004.
