Just another reason why NOT to buy a Ford!

Ford can't please anybody
Fending off a boycott from a conservative organization, automaker angers gay advocacy groups.
December 6, 2005: 10:40 AM EST

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Ford Motor Co. faced sharp criticism from gay and lesbian advocacy groups for agreeing to stop advertising in gay-themed publications in the face of a boycott by the conservative American Family Association, according to a report Tuesday.

The AFA launched a boycott of Ford (Research) in May to protest marketing aimed at gay and lesbian consumers, the Detroit News said. The automaker responded by promising that most of its brands, with the exception of Sweden-based Volvo, will no longer target gay consumers through advertising.

After Ford's concession, gay and lesbian organizations argued that the automaker caved in to pressure from the religious right, the paper said.

1. Corporate Creeps..... but....
I can't help but feel for the lowly employee that is ultimately going to be caught up and hurt by all this. Taking a stand is obviously important, but it is sad that their ever decreasing workforce are going to take another hit.

2. Yep...and Subaru is laughing their asses off
I think this is just further proof of how American auto manufacturers are out of touch with mainstream thinking.

Bowing to the nutsos during a time of economic downturn is stupid, stupid, stupid.

btw--I drive a Subaru.

16. VW probably feels the same way as Subaru -
they've never been afraid of marketing their products in the gay & lesbian community..."dah, dah, dah"...

I'd really like to purchase a VW with a TDI engine (diesel) for my next vehicle, and run it on biodiesel, allowing me to flip off a number of different groups that piss me off!

4. I already own a Ford Taurus and I plan on keeping it for a while
and when I do buy another car, it will probably be a Ford. Sorry, but I love the Taurus.

5. As long as you understand that you will continue to be part of the problem

and that's OK with you...then go for it.

However, I have noticed that we Americans are so attached to our "stuff," that we make excuses for everything. "But, what can I do? I would have to drive 5 more miles to not go to Walmart." "But, I love Fords...I will have to buy another one even though there are other cars just as good, and they are bowing down to the Religious Right whom I despise? I am sorry...."

"Sorry" doesn't work in the US anymore...but, you are in the majority, and the reason we aren't going to see any real social change for the better.

It's easier to keep driving your Ford, isn't it.

On edit: not enough coffee...in this economy, I would not suggest that someone get rid of a pefectly good car. I was suggesting not buying another one unless they change their policy.

9. Sorry - I love my Mustang. Best damn car I've ever had
It's 11 years old and only THIS year had any problems and that was just a sensor.

I refuse to buy Japanese cars.

My next car will either be another Mustang or a Mini Cooper. I don't like many cars on the market now days. They're mostly pretty ugly.

10. I bought a Nissan in 1987. Put 200,000 thousand miles on it
and it had the original clutch on it when I GAVE it away.

The carberator (that might be spelled wrong) had to be rebuilt at 150,000.

Now...tell me again about your problems with Japanese cars?

12. I'll tell you mine -
The wife's 92 Nissan Sentra in a span of 140,000 miles went through three clutches, a rack and pinion/power steering system, two exhaust systems, brake repair almost regularly, leaking oil, a starter, a broken heater and an AC that conked out at 65,000 miles. She got rid of it for a Corolla last year.

My 97 Cavalier? About to reach it's 210,000th mile . . . same clutch, same engine, same tranny. Very little difference in driving quality since I bought it.

Results are not typical. Every American horror story can be matched with a foreign one just as easily.

13. What are my problems with Japanese cars?
At best they are made by non-union Americans.
At worst they are not made by Americans.
Profits leave the country in the form of trade deficit.

Don't tell me American companies don't make good cars, I have bought American made Chrysler products and one Chevy for 30 years, probably 10 or 12 new cars and trucks. Never had a lemon, almost every one a standard shift, never had to replace a clutch, never had anything but a couple of minor problems. And yes they were made in the USA, I look for the country of origin!

In my opinion, Americans accepting foreign produced cars started the outsourcing ball rolling.

Back in the seventies and eighties I used to say "I never met an unemployed Japanese automaker, but I have met an unemployed American automaker". If you meet one, tell him or her how much you like your Nissan!

American companies do make fuel efficient cars and trucks, they are at the same dealership as the SUVs, you can find them, just look.

14. My Nissan was made in Tennesee; my Subaru was made in Louisiana.
Your parts for your "American" made cars are probably foreign, probably have been for a long time...you just have that American Label on yours, and that gives you a false sense of pride.

15. No, no that's not true.
Read the sticker on the window, it will show the where the contents were manufactured and assembled.

I know many Japanese and German cars are assembled in the States, but most of the content is not manufactured here. The profits on multiple levels do not remain here. Japan used to be our biggest trade deficit problem.

My Dakota pickup only had a Japanese transmission as foreign content, and it is the worst shifting transmission I have ever had, and I have driven standards for forty years.

We are on our third Neon, first one traded because of high mileage, second victim of a car-deer accident, all made in Belvedere Michigan by union workers. Some are assembled in Mexico, you need to read the sticker.

Aren't outsourcing and downsizing a shame. Gee, I wish I could do something to help stop the loss of American jobs.

11. I will go to my grave praising the wonders of the 86-87 Taurus
Edited on Wed Dec-07-05 07:37 AM by Montauk6
It was THE perfect automobile; I know, it was the ugly duckling at the time. But it was an aerodynamic marvel. You'll think me psycho but if someone offered me a choice of BMW or Lexus or whatever the hot selling car of the moment is and a completely refurbished 87 Taurus GL, I'd pick the latter in a heartbeat.

However, I think Ford deserves being hit with a counterboycott that will send a message that these consoviet jeezoids are but ONE SMALL FACTION of the country.

Y'know... it's too bad that we can't figure a way to organize a group called THE REST OF US. It would make the Bible Belt look like a watchband.

8. screw ford....
But it is nonsense to think that most corporations would give a rat's ass about anything but the bottom line. The Christo-Nazis can organize well. The Gays and Lesbians...? It won't matter much as Peak Oil's effects become more obvious over time. For your next car, I recommend going retro like with an old Tercel, or Early Subaru, Honda CVCC or Isetta .... something really good on gas. A motorcycle would be best. or Maybe a horse. Recommend an Appie or Paint.

btw: I am another liberal or maybe even radical left something in North Carolina.....

18. the Toby Keith ads were enough
Using the guy who put the slaughter of innocents to music, gave death a theme song, to sell their trucks, was reason enough to protest.
