Merh mentioned this story the other night. I think it is one of the most despicable things I have heard about FEMA and its lack of response to the Katrina victims.

A woman in MS offered to let FEMA use her land after the hurricane. Three months later, she has electric bills of $8000 PER MONTH that FEMA or its contractor not only hasn't paid, but they are now threatening to seize her land. In the meantime, she had to borrow money to pay her electric bill and can't reopen her business because FEMA is on her land!!

Merh talked about this the other night and I have not been able to stop thinking about it. It is just mind boggling.

I also heard on CNN today that the justice dept has asked a judge to throw out a lawsuit Katrina victims filed against FEMA on the grounds that the victims don't have the right to sue FEMA. WTF??

If any of you can catch a repeat of the hearings (even a small portion) you'll probably agree that this should be sent to every single person on that committee. Rep. Shays is on the top of my list!

18. I watched a little bit earlier tonight

and one woman who was a community leader kept saying it was like a concentration camp (I'd believe her since she was there) and some republican guy kept telling her to not call it that but she wouldn't back down. I'm glad they have someone who can help and be a voice. How they're handling this is just despicable.

She was on last week a couple times. She wrote the best letter about surviving Katrina. She and her husband have started to rehab their house themselves after waiting for their insurance company to contact them. Now they are out of money and are living in a shell of a structure. She said they have NEVER been contacted by their insurance company or FEMA. THREE MONTHS they have waited and no one has contacted them.

She also talked about friends who have committed suicide. They just couldn't take the stress of losing everything they own. She said in her work with the police dept she sees people every day who are in deep despair.

I just sat there listening to her and cried.

Repukes have a new Chief Justice Suit on the court, Scalia (suit), Thomas (suit) and a suit to be confirmed soon. Over in Congress they refuse to put oil executives under oath (just like Bush and Cheney). They refuse to listen to Dems who want to talk about 911.

If she refuses or cannot deal with the bills, the electric company will take her to court. She will under the new laws NOT be allowed to file for bankruptcy and then Bechtel moves in and becomes her new 'boss'.
