AP Shocker: Iraq VP Disputes Bush on Training of Forces
Iraq VP says Bush is wrong about Iraq army

Mon Dec 05, 2005 at 10:32:15 AM PDT
Remember how Bush couldn't shut up about the great state of the Iraqi security forces? We've already had plenty of information disputing Bush's rosy assessment. But here's the harshest dissent yet. And it comes from Iraq vice president Ghazi al-Yawer:
http://www.dailykos.com/

The training of Iraqi security forces has suffered a big "setback" in the last six months, with the army and other forces being increasingly used to settle scores and make other political gains, Iraqi Vice President Ghazi al-Yawer said Monday.

Al-Yawer disputed contentions by U.S. officials, including President Bush, that the training of security forces was gathering speed, resulting in more professional troops.

1. So what's the point of having a "trained" army if there's no consensus
as to what they're going to do with their supposedly new-found skills?

Seems to me that a sense of national unity or at least mutual tolerance would go a lot farther than a lot of "highly trained" young military men running around.

11. You're exactly right on that last point.
So why can't our "leaders" see it?

2. Another under-reported shocker - When Kerry visited other leaders in Jan.
Edited on Mon Dec-05-05 12:46 PM by blm
he was told by many of them that they had OFFERED to train Iraqi troops for the US, but Bush has turned them down. Every time he brings it up the media lets the story just sit there.

No media will discuss this aspect of the story and ask WHY is Bush refusing to share the job of training Iraqi troops with other countries, and especially those countries who can more honestly and legitimately deal with a Muslim population?

3. If another country trained Iraqi troops...
...then Bush's US contractor cronies wouldn't get any money out of the deal. And if it don't make money for The Family, The Family isn't interested...

4. Pathetic, isn't it? On Face the Nation Kerry said the only way there can
be success in Iraq is politically - we need to show we have NO PERMANENT BASES, and NO PERMANENT INTERESTS.

Let the Iraqis have the bases alreay built and turn over the construction projects to Iraqi companies.

Most of the media lets his words go unheard and undiscussed. Deliberately.

18. You're right, but it will never happen.

Even for a democratic president, it's going to be hard politically to give up "our" bases in Iraq. And that's really the whole point, isn't it?

10. this is very true

Many European countries, well NATO as a whole offered the US to train Iraqui troops and police OUTSIDE Iraq, in neighbouring countries like Jordan, Dubai etc... other Arab countries or even on their own territory.

This was turned down by Bush. That's why the NATO engagement has been so little. Bush wanted more foreign troops, not really training.

BTW some research going back to summer 2004 and before will show the official statements these countries (including France and Germany) made about the training of Iraquis....

9. My favorite quote
“Burns actually voted for the bill before he voted against it,” said Matt McKenna, a spokesman for the Montana Democratic Party. “The only thing that happened in between is he got paid.”

15. Kick, It's Important that we talk about it even if the media won't
Need to find General Casey's plan for withdrawal which Rep. Murtha's plan was based on. Gen. Casey was forced to back down on his timetable for withdrawal but we need to listen to the military, the guys who know what they are doing and push the media to discuss it.

16. So what is new in that ? Its Bush's second nature to Lie
The chimp must lie to survive. He will keep lying even if his ass is literally on fire and there is smoke coming out of his rectum. Bush is the most wretched creature in this universe and beyond and the RePUKElican worship him. Bush must be tried along with Saddam and the punishment given to Saddam must be given to Bush as well. Bush is an equal if not more of a criminal mass murderer than Saddam.
