He's been full of it since the get-go. I remember seeing him on a PBS Front Line show sweating in front of a TV audience when members of Act Up called him on his cruel jokes at the expense of persons living his HIV (e.g., repeating the gerbilling lie). They had to clear the studio audience for him to finish the hour. (To his credit, he apologized for his anti-AIDS bullshit and took it out of his on-air schtick.)

RW radio is funny.

My favorite RW hate-radio technique is the disconnect-on-debate.

Its a classic. Thats where someone calls in with some information or logic that completely tears the host's point apart.

Disconnect on debate is done by following these steps:

Recognize that the caller is a threat to your position as a wise, unquestioned source.

Refute the caller by labeling whatever they say as a lie. Demand a source, and if they provide one dismiss it as "not credible" and demand another source.

Inform the audience that the caller is a liar and probably hates America.

Let them get in one last gasp, and then interrupt again with a pompous, self-important tirade.

Mute and disconnect the caller during your rant.

Finish off the rant with a powerful-sounding and vague statement. Pause for the caller to respond (even though you know that he has already been hung up on).

Collect yourself, and move on to the next topic in a tone of voice that lets your loyal audience know that "that guy totally got his ass handed to him, and he was too afraid to respond"

However, this post is a little bit skimpy on reasons why that is the case.


If a right-winger came on here with such a superficial attack on say, Dan Rather, we would make mincemeat of him.

I wish you'd have put a little more susbtance in your contention of how full of it Rush is.


One of my favorite examples is how he claims that the poor in America are doing great, "because most of them have a car and a color TV" - as though a car (without which there is no possibility of a job in most of the US) or a TV, which costs 10% as much as a month's rent, is some sort of indicator of a great standard of living. A better indicator is the fact that working people cannot afford to buy a home, and in fact, even just rental housing is taking up a larger share of take-home pay than ever before.

Something Rush, having grown up in the home of a wealthy judge, could never understand...
