Arrogance in the Ozarks [Church and State Blog]
In an oped in the Springfield News-Leader Joan Covington of Springfield Missouri makes the case that morality is not possible without her religious beliefs.

"Stop and think, folks. Since Bible reading and teaching have been removed from our public areas, crime has increased at an alarming rate. They (the ACLU and others) are greatly responsible for this horrible turn in the minds of people who have no conscience." Joan Covington

Look at what happened the next year when in 1989 the Supreme Court ruled that a Christian nativity scene display at Allegheny County Courthouse in Pittsburg was a violation of the Establishment Clause:

2. Ah, Springfield Missouri...from whence the "bad poetry" came. :)

Bad Poetry...LOL! Why am I linking all my posts together tonight? It seems they're all related, I guess. :) Hmmmm, I wonder if crime or religion (or graphs, for that matter) are related to bad poetry.

6. I hope somebody there responds to that ignorant column
perhaps someone should remind her about how religious fundamentalism protected wifebeating husbands and child abuse - of how most protestant churches changed the physical image of Jesus to attract more men to the congregation since alcoholism was on the rise around the turn of the 19th/20th century. Maybe remind her that it was religious interpretation that encouraged both the use of slaves and the ban on interracial marriages...and the practices of one particular version of christianity that allowed women to die rather than perform a c-section because then it wouldn't be considered "natural" childbirth and was against God's Will.

Perhaps ask how her morality could be so fluid and so easily changed, since it is linked to the dictates of any random minister who appears to teach according to his own whims. And why, if the Bible can be read, is she overly dependent on a strange man to stand before her and "teach" the meaning of white male supremacy to her so she'll fully understand her role in life.

Finally, suggest that, as a woman, she really isn't appropriately holding up the traditional teachings of the Bible by even writing that column, since everyone knows that a woman is nothing more than property and should only be allowed to speak her mind with permission of her master.
