Blade executive wins prestigious award

Ron Royhab, vice president and executive editor of The Blade, has been named the 2005 recipient of the prestigious Benjamin C. Bradlee Editor of the Year Award by the National Press Foundation.

Cited in particular were The Blade's coverage of the Coingate scandal involving Republican fund-raiser and coin-funds manager Tom Noe of Maumee and The Blade's receipt of a Pulitzer Prize in 2004 for its series of stories, "Buried Secrets, Brutal Truths," uncovering atrocities during the Vietnam War.

"In recommending Ron Royhab as the 2005 NPF editor of the year, the committee recognizes both an extraordinary run of stories in the Toledo Blade since April this year and a nationally important and Pulitzer Prize-winning series of stories last year," board Chairman George Condon wrote in an e-mail explaining Mr. Royhab's selection.

"The Blade, under his leadership, has produced stories packing a punch surprising for a medium-sized paper," wrote Mr. Condon, who is also the Washington bureau chief for Copley News Service.
