another Katrina casualty
my dear aunt died Thanksgiving Day. She lost her home and all her beloved antiques in the hurricane.

She watched CSPAN daily and called in to trash Bush and Cheney...she was a formidable woman.

But losing everything she owned was more than she could bear.

Please light a candle for my aunt Martha. We are all shocked by her death..but understand.

Love you Aunt Martha!

1. My condolences to you
No one should have to go through that in this country. No one.

4. I'm so sorry...

My friend's dad just committed suicide over the same thing. The older folks are having a very very hard time, including my family. It's not fun when you have to physically restrain the elderly to stop them from killing themselves.

9. I'm hanging in there, but the battles with the red tape masters is
draining. FEMA is a joke and I have spent the last couple of days on the phone with Bechtel and Congressman Taylor's office just to get much needed repairs to my trailer. I had no tie downs :-( and that is not good living on the bay when the winds are blowing. And my sewer line was put in wrong and they tried to tell me I had to hire a plumber to fix it.

I can handle the fight, it is draining and frustrating, but I have my wits and my health. I worry about others who are not as strong or pig headed as I am. Who helps them when FEMA says "no" or when no one comes to make repairs?

See this thread about the news coverage this evening.

I hope you and yours continue to find the strength and the hope -- it is daunting, but we can do it. I'm here is you need me.

5. I am so sorry for your loss

Your post made me think of that Elton John song ... "but losing everything ... is like the sun going down on me" ... Perhaps she lived that line and died of a broken heart.

6. I'm sorry for your loss, medeak.

So many of our elderly have died since Katrina came to shore. Katrina destroyed so much and broke their hearts in the process. They just couldn't recover.

If you don't mind, I would like to include you and yours in my prayers. May you find comfort in your memories.
