I would like to watch the vote of no-confidence online. Anyone know where? The CBC doesn't have a link.

3. Boooring...
This "Government falling" has been pre-ordained since election day last year.

Still, it doesn't happen every day.

5. Right, 1978
Right, I'm just interested because a) I'm in a Canadian politics class and b) it hasn't happened in a long time.

6. I'd rather follow Canada's politics, than America's
fewer fascists and freepers.

7. Well...look at the crimes the Bush Adminstration has committed....

And...what?

I admire the parlimentary system of government for this very reason. Governments can be accountable. Governments can vulnerable to no-confidence votes...and can fall.

11. And another thing..
Our Prime Minister has to stand in the Commons and actually take questions from the opposition. And he has to answer them.

Georgie doesn't have to respond to jack shit from anyone.

14. The closest we have to that is the occasional press conference.
And we all know what a joke those are.

15. I really wish the U.S. would adopt this convention.
If it had been in place in 2000, Bush wouldn't even have bothered to run. We might still be stuck with a right-wing maniac, but at least it would be an articulate right-wing maniac, who could think on her/his feet.

17. Thanks. I got it on CSPAN
Do all MPs now have to face election in January? The commentator was saying that some may not be back. Did the term end now even without this vote?

I am so sorely lacking in Canadian political knowledge even though I live so close to the border.

18. What happens next...
is that Paul Martin will ask the Governor General to dissolve government tomorrow, she'll do so, and an election date will be named. Law dictates that election day is on a Monday, so most pundits are saying it'll either be Jan. 16 or Jan. 23. On that date, all 308 Members of Parliament will be up for election. Whichever party wins the most seats gets a crack at forming government. Conventional wisdom has it that the Liberals will probably win another minority government. (That is, they'll win a plurality of the seats, but not a majority. Hence they'll have to work with other parties to hold onto government and get stuff done.)

19. yes. even the ones who may have won seats in the last few months ...
... in by-elections. We have to start the whole House of Commons again from scratch! (Our Senators aren't picked by election, so the "upper house" stays the same.)

I know that people are grumbling up here because of the bother of having a winter election -- but it's actually kind of exciting, to know that we could go to the polls at any time, 1 month's notice (especially if it's a minority government).

Some provinces, like BC, have scheduled set dates for elections (every 4 years, in May). Not the feds, though.

How fun! A campaign in the snow and cold.

At least it won't be drawn out like ours are down here, eh?

Good luck!
