PHOTOS: U.S. Soldiers deliver food to Abu Ghraib
Soldiers from 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry hand out food items Nov. 17 to help Abu Ghraib citizens get back on their feet in a west Baghdad neighborhood. The Soldiers from 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division delivered 1,000 pounds of rice and beans, various canned goods, pots, pans, and diapers - enough supplies to distribute to more than 750 families. (U.S. Army Photo by 1st Lt. Kristofer Deniger, 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry)

This is #1 On the Google News search for Abi Ghraib...

Makes you wonder why delivering food to an American run prison should be news?

1. excuse me, but 1000 lbs to 750 families??? that's a very small package
per family. how many days can you feed your family with about a pound of food?

2. Well, in all fairness, 1,000 pounds of rice and beans makes many times

that amount of actual food when prepared. When added to other ingredients, 100 pounds of rice and beans can last a LONG time. It's not enough, not by a long shot, but it's more than you make it sound like.

4. it's just over 1 pound PER FAMILY. it's nothing.
it's completely insignificant. it's starvation rations. if there is a family of four, that's about 4-5 ounces of food per person. think about what you are saying... how long can a child live on 4 ounces of food??? that's the same weight in food as 1/2 cup of water!

stop pretending this could actually make a difference to these people. it represents at MOST 2 days of rations for a family of 4.

5. Have you ever cooked rice? How about beans?
Did you know they expand? Yeah, that's right, they get bigger when you cook them.

I'd say it's a far cry above nothing. Of course, if they gave them nothing, you would probably not even acknowledge the plight of those 750 families at all other than to lump them in as part of the entire Iraq situation, but since these particular families are being given at least some token help, you choose to complain about the amount they are given rather than worry about the thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of other families there which are receiving NOTHING.

Personally, I think a pound or two of rice is a far cry above a pound or two of dirt.

I guess it's all in how you look at it though.

6. yes, i have cooked rice and beans. 4 oz of dry rice expands to roughly
one cup of cooked rice.

how long will one cup of rice keep one person alive?

if we have our soldiers risking their lives delivering food, why aren't they delivering enough food to keep a family alive for a month at a time instead of a couple of days?

7. Because to deliver that much rice would take 10 times as many troops
and an equivalent number of vehicles to transport the food.

Of course, this is leaving out the other materials discussed such as canned foods, etc. which you completely fail to mention.

I'm through arguing with you.

3. Unless the photos are of soldiers sticking a carrot up someone's butt...
I'd suggest these "Abu Ghraib" photos are basically propaganda.
