Kin of slain U.S. soldier praise Dem

WASHINGTON - A thank-you note yesterday from the father of a slain soldier should ease any concerns Rep. John Murtha may have about political fallout from his call for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

Ronald Golby, who runs a computer services business in Murtha's hometown of Johnstown, Pa., said he delivered the note to the conservative Democrat's district office along with a photo of his son, Army Spec. Christopher Golby.

"I am still furious" over the remarks of Rep. Jean Schmidt suggesting that Murtha - a decorated Marine veteran of Vietnam - was a "coward" for urging a pullout within six months, Ron Golby said in an E-mail to the Daily News.

"I've been moved by the immediate outpouring of support I've received, including the calls and letters to my offices: 78% approving of what I'm doing, 22% disapproving," Murtha said today on his Internet blog.

The revolt against the war in Iraq has been largely leaderless -- it has been the spontaneous uprising of folk in middle America. Murtha is simply giving it an official voice -- at last. God bless him.

"The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion. The American public is way ahead of us. The United States and coalition troops have done all they can in Iraq, but it is time for a change in direction. Our military is suffering. The future of our country is at risk. We cannot continue on the present course. It is evident that continued military action is not in the best interests of the United States of America, the Iraqi people or the Persian Gulf Region."
